Thror's Arkenstone eject button :)

Here goes a nonsensical random topic... The first time I saw it I really expected the Arkenstone to have been more firmly attached to Thror's throne, so when it plopped out just like that I couldn't help but giggle. Also gave me another thought -- maybe Thror loved it so much he had it easily detachable so he could take it to bed every night?

You would think that such an icon would be better secured. Maybe having it easily removed like that was part of the Dragon Sickness, and he couldn't bear to have it out of sight for any length of time.

He's not gonna leave that stone in the setting like that regardless of how easily removed it is or someone might take it. I think he did remove it every night and sleep with it!

I've only seen the movie once but from what I remember The Arkenstone was flat wasn't it? I was expcting it to be an orb but it was a flat smooth stone does anyone have any pics of it? it was still cool though espeially when they found it.

No, I don't think it was flat.

It looked rounded to me. Maybe after they got it out of the mountain they made it faceted as well.

Not a round globe like I expected either. More like an emerald cut gem, sort of a rectangular octagonal but with rounded edges. Kind of like this (but not quite!):
'"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb.'

…the mechanism securing it could only be opened by Thror's finger?

...someone who might get overly attached to jewellery (Middle Earth seems to be full of them - ahem *my precioussss*). So I think it likely that he took the Arkenstone with him when he wasn't sitting on his throne. Slept with it under his pillow, probably.

Imagine, upon Smaugs arrival, Thror yells "To the throne!". And off he goes... Think Merlin in Sword and the Stone.
