Samuel Vimes vs Samwise Gamgee vs Samwell Tarly Can't Post

Which Sam is the best?

Sam Vimes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.
Sam from LotR.
Sam from George Martin's a Song of Ice and Fire.
(Based on the best character, not the best series.)

Sam. [In reply to] Can't Post

Samwise Gamgee, of course! He's the best Sam ever anywhere. I've not read all of the books in which the other two you mention appear (I read one Discworld book with Vimes, and either the first three, or first 4, not sure at this late date, of Song of Ice and Fire).

But it is completely unimaginable to me that my opinion would change. Sam is one of my favorite characters in any book or series that I have read.

Well, in terms of combat, it would have to be Sam Vimes... [In reply to] Can't Post

Unless Samwell Tarly becomes much more proficient in arms in the later books?

Not just in LotR. My all-round favourite character.

Me too, almost. [In reply to] Can't Post

There is one other character in one other series I may prefer...

Actually it is hard to say as they are very different people. At any rate, this other character is not a Sam. Wink

Severus Snape... [In reply to] Can't Post

Harry's least favorite teacher at Hogwarts. Smile (From J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, my second favorite fantasy series after LotR. Snape fascinated me to such a large degree I was even driven to perpetrate fan fiction about this series.)

Shiny! [In reply to] Can't Post

Along with Neville he was my favourite character. Snape was so complex - loved him.

Do you have any links to the fanfiction?
I once tried to write fanfiction concerning The Children of Hurin.
Didn't work out well. Crazy

Of course! [In reply to] Can't Post

This was my most popular story:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3740742/1/Return-to-Hogwarts

(It is also short, so good one to try).

All my other stories on FF.net are also about HP, and all but two are about Snape. Some were written before Deathly Hallows came out so they get details wrong (but I had made substantially correct guesses about Snape after reading HBP).

Thanks, I really enjoyed reading this [In reply to] Can't Post

I always liked the complexity of Snape's character, even if I did not like him much of the time. He really is the tragic anti-hero in so many ways- I wept for him in DH both during the book and film when he realised that Lily was dead. Thought it was wonderful that Harry & Ginny named their son after him (albeit a second name)

Sam Vimes [In reply to] Can't Post

Samwell Tarly is pretty much useless, and both Sam Gamgee and Sam Tarly are more 'helpers' to the main character (Frodo and Jon respectively), whilst Sam Vimes is a leader, who has risen up through the ranks to become Commander of the City Watch. Also Sam Vimes improves more as a character throughout the series (from being a lazy alcoholic to becoming one of the best and most successful leader throughout the series.

Interesting view on the subject. [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to TORn!

Terry Pratchett is really good at character development, isn't he? Just look at Rincewind. I think Sam Tarly might still prove himself in the next ASOIAF book.
