The Hobbit board Can't Post

I'm afraid that I, with genuine disappointment, will be avoiding The Hobbit boards from now on unless I absolutely have to voice my opinion on something. I know for a fact (as do our lovely admins) that many people have been driven away from this board as evidenced by "The Courtesy of Your Hall is Somewhat Lessened of Late" thread put up by the admins. I have felt this way about The Hobbit board for some time and I'm afraid I must now join the number who have (possibly quite wisely) scuttled away.

For too many reasons to list I no longer feel that it is an enjoyable place to post. I came here to talk to like-minded and interesting people, not to have pointless arguments concerning a non-existent world via a computer screen.

Sorry if I seem to be overdramatic but I had to voice my opinion and I'm sure I'm not alone here.

Perhaps your main concern is the pointless arguments, because everyone here is like-minded in the sense of their interest in the stories of Middle Earth. But I would suppose the entire website is devoted to a non-existent world. And without exception, this is all done via computer screens. So on three out of four points, there's not much choice. Yes that's what I meant, hehe [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes the main concern is the pointless arguments, to establish where I stand on the others:

The 'like-minded people' bit is why I love this site so much. Of course opinions are varied and often strong (which is what makes them interesting), it's when others begin to criticize and even belittle the opinions of others that they become less welcome and desirable.

The 'non-existent world' bit: Believe me I wish I lived in Middle-Earth, but sadly it is of course fictional. What I meant was the fact that it is rarely worth getting stressed out about things that don't exist in the real world. After all, it is here for us, the fans, to enjoy!

The 'computer screens' bit: What I meant by that is that sitting at a computer is really a very silly way to argue, although I suppose the whole concept of arguing in itself is rather silly in hindsight.

Sorry if my post was quite unclear, I may have accidently slipped into rant mode in an attempt to emphasize my point. Hopefully the rest was clear enough! Wink

I've only been back a week [In reply to] Can't Post

But the atmosphere seems a lot better than when I left! But then again, I haven't had the time to read everything like usual. And I've started skipping over posts from just reading the subject line. Do stick around in the board though, and read over particular posts/users/threads that don't interest you/annoy you.

Fair enough [In reply to] Can't Post

It's not really how it's been since you've been away, just how I feel it's been in general for quite a period, although the last few weeks helped to seal the deal. But 'tis true that I shall not be able to avoid posting there completely: I wouldn't want to in honesty, because the news is often too exciting. Fear not, R-A will still be around to haunt the other boards as regularly as ever!

Welcome back, Daniel! [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope you had an exciting time!

I also think the Hobbit board is better. Not perfect, but better. In fact, it will never be ,perfect, because there will always be people who,s strong disagreement may be taken personally by others. The key is to treat everyone, and everyone's opinion with respect, and if you feel that someone isn't doing that, let an Admin know. If it's simply strong disagreement with what someone is saying that's bothing anyone, it's probably time to count to ten and move on to another thread.
