To be honest [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it is highly unlikely that the Hobbit will win anything, especially bearing in mind the hostile reception of many critics in America. PJ himself said back in November or December that it was unlikely, particularly as this was just the first film in the trilogy.

Of course, if it did win something, I would be absolutely delighted. Smile

It has one chance [In reply to] Can't Post

The only chance it has in the three categories is makeup, which it absolutely deserves. However it might go to Les Miserables because the academy loves to reward beautiful people looking 'ugly.' BTW, when PJ was talking about their doubtful Oscar chances, he was talking about major awards, not technical ones.

Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll be surprised if they don't win hair and make-up. The other two categories are a little hard to judge. Perhaps 50% likely for production design, and 30% for sound editing.

I won't be surprised if they don't win at all. [In reply to] Can't Post

Although they deserve it, look at it this way. The Academy, as really do the rest of us, view this as one film not three. Films like Les Mis have one shot at the Oscar. I can see them letting AUJ leave without anything until TABA. Although I will be disappointed, I can sort of understand it and won't be truly outraged unless they are totally dissed when it comes to TABA.

I feel the same way about acting Noms. I think if we see them (and I feel pretty confident we will) it will be in TABA.

TVNZ had a report last night from TORN's pre-Oscars art event, [In reply to] Can't Post

in which they interviewed Chris Pirotta (one of TORN's PTB) - but I just can't find it online! Is anyone else a greater wizard with TVNZ's website than me? It'd be great to post a link to the news item here.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

random thots.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks to Linuxelf for the video! (Too bad I'm on the other coast).

???: Has anyone else seen any of the other films? I am, of course, a rabid Tolkien Geek, so I'm all over The Hobbit. I also feel it might not get any real awards until all three films are out (much like LoTR). I did see Life of Pi, beautiful, probably had some production challenges, but I heartily dislike "dream frames" or "magical realism" or anything which goes, "oh, wait, that maybe wasn't real". The film did have something to say about how and why we tell stories, but... arrrrrgggggghhhh! My friend saw Lincoln, and said it was awesome. We live near the famous Gettysburg (as in Civil War, Battle of...) my favorite dog-running trail begins at Hanover junction, where Lincoln once stopped. We are steeped in that bit of history with random battle reinactments all the time, and Civ-War reinactors all over the place (they are quite good and very dedicated to portraying history accurately, down to the stitching in their uniforms).

I did not see LeMis (wanted to, might catch it on DVD) and still think this way about costuming and makeup regarding all these films:
Historical drama: look at some period paintings/photos, dress your actors. Horses in period gear. Add mud liberally.
Guy stuck on lifeboat: some sunburn, some tattered pirate gear. Some dead fish. A CG tiger.
Modern drama: dress your actors.
Middle Earth: turn a 6'2" guy who looks like an Elf into a stout stolid 5' Dwarf. Make him sexy. Then do it with scale doubles, stunt doubles, riding doubles, some other doubles (none of whom look like him at all). Now do it with 12 other guys. Now do it with a few Wizards, a Hobbit, and all the orcs that aren't CG. Throw in a few Elves. Find horses that make the Elves look Elvish. Find other Horses that look like Ponies; create entire "hairy pony suits", and don't let your horses (or Dwarves) collapse of heat stroke...

I fear we have nothing here in the US that even approaches the Awesomeness That Is WETA.

Go outside and play...

I've seen most of them... [In reply to] Can't Post

...and I'd say that AUJ has a very strong shot at Makeup & Hairstyling. But prod. design seems to be an uphill battle. All of the nominees have stellar prod. teams, and the finished products show it. Lincoln has incredible detail in costuming. For example, they had to dress Daniel Day-Lewis properly, so he would appear to be as tall as Lincoln was himself. And Day-Lewis couldn't just stand on stilts, so the costuming helped convey this illusion. It's flawless.

Life of Pi could completely run the table this year. It's that well-liked. I honestly couldn't tell most of the time whether the tiger was CG or real. That's what good CG does. The difficult part with the Visual Effects award is that AUJ has incredible CG as well. Yes, some shots are better than others. I completely agree that the warg chase scene lacks the quality, visually, of other moments. So I would put money on Pi to win this, but I hope AUJ sneaks it in. Go WETA!

Overall, 2012 had an unusually high number of excellent films. There are very few clear cut favorites for any award. I'm looking forward to seeing things unfold tonight!
Looking at films coming out in 2013, I think DOS will gain traction as the awards season approaches next February. Fewer contenders stand in its way.

FRENCH musical, Bomby?:) [In reply to] Can't Post

Ask Boulbil and Schoenberg for that, who just lost Best Song to Adele for "Skyfall" (WTHeck?!? It was a great song, but the Academy hates giving Oscars to Pop singers unless they know you're gonna win BP--think Enya for song for FOTR) .
Most Les Miz fans, let alone global critics, have forgotten that Les Miz was their production from 1980, not the Cameron MackIntosh London/Broadway phenom. Or that the origional Eponine, Frances Rufflele, was from the origional French production too. Or that the song "On My Own" was adapted from a melody she sang in the origional French production...sigh.

I wish more people were familar with the French origional. It's..much different.

Would seem [In reply to] Can't Post

to support my ranting about the Academy being on an "anti-franchise" bent. Pure politics. It could be that they wanted to give the WETA folks time to clear more spaces on their mantel..or maybe not. (See my post in 0 for 3 thread above.

What will be the best place to coment on winners and losers? it has been one STRANGE night, even by Oscar standards..(again, see above.) I usually pick the wrong thread to post in.

As it is very late here (2AM) and my spelling does what it usually starts to do at such times, it's time for me to sign off. How much do you think politcs of varius sorts played a role in Argo's win? With Michelle Obama reading the BP winner, this couldn't be just coincidence. Can't wait to see what the media will say! (When Jimmy Carter gave an interview recently saying that the Canadians did more during that incident then the CIA did, even though HE was Prez at rhe time and it was thus his crisis..wow, can't get more interesting!
