I'll be part of a flash mob at noon and 4 today in my town.

this reminds me of a song from Ruth McKenzie's Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden [In reply to] Can't Post

This is her telling of a story from the Kalevala. Aino, a maiden, is in the forest near her home when she is confronted by Väinämöinen, a 900 year old magician/singer who tells her she must come with him and be married. She refuses, saying that she does not want wealth or anything else he can offer.

Her parents think this is a good thing, Väinämöinen is an important man and it will bring prestige to the family. Aino defies her parents.

What happens to her is told over numerous songs (instrumental and with lyrics... with much of the lyrics taken from the Kalevala)

Towards the end, this song is sung:

Give Us Room to Roar
(Ruth MacKenzie with lyrics inspired by traditional Finnish festival poem songs translated by Keith Bosley.)
youtube

Give us room to dance, a room to dance in.
Give us room to roar, a room to roar in.
Where our voice is heard, there the trees break
When we hear our feet, sing on a floorboard.

Give us room to dance, a room to dance in.
Give us room to roar, a room to roar in.
How our shoes have ached, our ox-hides groaning.
For the world to quake, with our foot pounding.

We will sing the sea, the sea to honey
We will pound the sea gravel to salt
We will fell the waves like stands of fir trees
Swinging songs like axes with our voices strong.

Oh rats... [In reply to] Can't Post

so that's what the cryptic entry in my appointments calendar meant --- a friend told me about this more than a month ago and I made a note in said calendar, meaning to participate in this event, then proceeded to forget all about it, and so missed it altogether. That is sooo annoying! Mad

This even was a scheduled event in Stuttgart, I mean not a flash mob thing but like an organized demonstration and registered with the police, and yet I heard nothing on the news today to remind me. Seems the virus that's been plaguing me for almost four weeks now has attacked my brain as well as my sinuses and lungs. Only hope that a lot of women all over the world remembered (haven't watched the news this evening either so am totally ignorant).

So how was it in your neck of the woods?

'Goodness gracious, you really are a messie!' 'Oh no, I'm not, these are all just mathoms...'

They had one at a local college! [In reply to] Can't Post

At Connecticut College, which was once a women-only college. I was disappointed that the local paper had only a picture, no video of it.

What reactions did you get?

Great idea for a great cause [In reply to] Can't Post

I've always wanted to be part of Thriller (Michael Jackson) flashmob, but raising awareness for something would be just as awesome.

Looks great [In reply to] Can't Post

and obviously for a great cause. I am curious though. In the video there didn't seem to be many/any men, were there any when you were part of the flash mob?

Your famous :) [In reply to] Can't Post

That is good some guys go. I know it's about ending abuse done to women but unless men get on board then im guessing most things wont change.

Though unfortunately i imagine the men who would ever hurt a woman would never go to something like this - but i'm sure it will change their opinions slowly so good on you for doing it i say, very worthwhile cause!

On a more silly note, i know you are a woman but whenever i think Annael, your avatar flashes before my eyes, lol, so was great to see the real you Smile

Color-coordinated, no less! [In reply to] Can't Post

That was a great idea, having everyone don something red (or pink) - Valentine colors.

The crowd around the dancers seemed to enjoy the "mob"! Did anyone come up to any of you afterwards to talk about it?

And, yeah, you're "famous" now! Laugh
