My husband picked this up at the rental place on a whim. It was made by Brian Henson, and was visually lovely, but something was a little off and it seemed to drag. The acting and writing were OK. I think part of it was that it was originally a miniseries, and we watched it all at once, so it went on and on. And partly the score was really pedestrian (except for the very lovely harp tune.)
The idea was interesting. A modern billionaire businessman discovers that he is the descendent of the original Jack, and that his family's ill-gotten gains have put a curse on the family; every man in his line has died by age forty. He's approaching that age now. He eventually gets back to the giant's land, and finds out that the classic fairy tale story is distorted, that the giant was a good guy and Jack and his mother were murderers. He has to set things right. Of course there's a love interest too.
This is not a kids' movie, with some scary scenes and hints of sex, but older kids might enjoy it. We liked it, when we could stay awake.

It has finished airing in the UK now and i thought it was brilliant - as is every BBC nature documentary with Attenborough really!
I was kinda half listening out for the music being over powering in Africa in comparison to Frozen Planet - i have to admit i noticed it much more in Africa but then i think that's because i am actively trying to feel what you did when watching Frozen Planet.
eventually when i get a proper blu-ray player i would love to get all the series on blu ray.
As for House of Cards - i can understand that - i have no desire to see the American version of The Office - it just can't be as good! I think i will have to watch 1990 original House of Cards after everyone's comments.
The only negatives for me are - for me the American one is now the original as i saw it first, the other one is fairly old going by my life and it looks old to me from the little i have seen and finally British politics just seems like a joke compared to American politics in my mind.
I will definitely watch it though, but for now my gf has said - 'no more politics for a while!'
We are now watching Misfits - Channel 4 programme. Anyone seen this?

But we took the Little Eruvandes to see The Lion King (the stage production) Sunday night, so it's all good.
Unfortunately, I'll miss the Saturday night rerun my local PBS station does because we'll be Cub Scout camping next weekend. We'll be back home for the Christmas special, which I'd hate to miss. I'm going to banish the boys to the Man Cave so the mama can watch her soap in peace!

In europe we got season 3 many months ago, why there is a delay in the US market, I have no idea of... I can imagine it being frustrating with spoilers everywhere. I would be!

I discovered many years ago that bad things happening even to fictional characters will have a disastrous effect on me. So I try to always know in advance, so the effect isn't quite so bad.

And didn't the scene between Carol and Beth seem just a bit too much like the scriptwriters saying we have to explain Daryl to the audience in words of one syllable...
There were some bits that made an impression though.... when Glen Maggie and Rick are clearing that wreck... the fact that in the woods and on the road are zombies that they just seem to acknowledge then ignore... one's and two's are no problem to them... just everyday background white noise. (Ties back in to Carol's talk with Carl about the background noise of pre zombie life.)

and I quite enjoyed it. I do enjoy Bond, in a kind of detached way. I'm not a huge Bond enthusiast. This one was easy for me to enjoy. (I don't think I'm necessarily the target demographic for Bond.)
Odd personal anecdote about Bond. In high school-probably between 1966-68-we had a dance unit in gym. We broke into groups of three and had to choose a song and make up a routine for it. Someone in my group had an album of James Bond music and we decided to use the James Bond Theme.
My mother was taking me to one of our group's house to practice. She lived in the country along a country road. You know, 55 mph speed limit and ditches running along the road with little embankment driveways leading into the farm properties. My 5 year old brother was standing in the seat between us. It was the 60s. She needed to turn left into the driveway and was waiting for a car coming toward us to get past so she could turn. I heard her gasp and then we were flying. We'd been hit by a good sized panel truck, surely going close to the speed limit. She had seen it coming in the rear view mirror. We were lucky that the approaching car had just passed us. We were also lucky that my mother could get the car under control before we went into the ditch. We were shaken and had nasty whiplash and the car was totaled, but we were okay.
And I think we did pretty well on the dance. I even remember some of the dance steps. :-)

We watched it this past evening. Excellent film, but some might find it a bit self-referential or incestuous in that (SPOILER WARNING) the villain has no higher goal or aspriation other than revenge (SPOILER ENDS).

I'm just so impressed with all the 'firsts' they have managed to film. The mini 'making-of' documentaries at the end of each episode are a telling indication of the lengths the team must go to to achieve such stunning footage.
I think it's 6 episodes. We are going to the Sahara next week and I can't wait.
I think it would be worth a go to watch the original House of Cards, but I would take your girlfriend's wise advice to stay away from politics for a while. Maybe if there is a reasonable gap it will help to minimise comparisons.
If you do ever get to it, I promise you will not regret meeting the legendary 'F U'.

A lovely, lovely little movie, poignant and endearing, with a killer soundtrack that is mostly opera - and I absolutely LOVE opera. Maggie Smith is wonderful in this and Billy Connolly is non-stop funny. Stellar performances all around, really.
This film was particularly notable for the unusual phenomenon of everyone staying for the closing credits. If you go to the movie you'll see why.
I highly, highly recommend this one, folks!

The storyline and character development were so interesting, including the slow unraveling of mysteries. Unlike "Lost," the truths behind the mysteries were consistent and satisfying when you go to them. And without giving specific spoilers, I really liked the part about some of the alien races fighting like divorced parents in front of their kids, trying to make them take sides. It was an unusual comparison to make, but an apt one that I never forget.

Maybe it's a guy thing, but I like Rose and have no eyerolls. I agree that her introduction to the show felt awkward and tacked on, but I'm glad she showed up. (The spoiler is that in the Xmas special, we find out she'll join the regular cast for next season.) Everyone is so restrained, and she's so boisterous. And she's hot too! (I can say that without fearing feminist backlash after reading all the "hot dwarf" comments lately.)
The funny thing about Thomas is that I enjoy hating him and O'Brien, but when he was crying in the rain when Mrs. Hughes found him, I felt genuinely sorry for him. Good actor, I guess. And yes, it was SO NICE to see O'Brien bested at last!!! Though I'll add that her genuine remorse over that soap incident way back when made me like her. For a few minutes. But it wouldn't be a good show if everyone was as sweet as Anna and Bates, though I wouldn't mind more of the latter two in the real world.

But if her first appearance is anything to go by, I don't think I'll like her. I understand bringing in another young woman to liven things up, but whereas Sybil broke the rules because she was passionate about social issues, Rose looks like she breaks the rules because she's spoiled. But if that turns out to be the case, I'm sure I'll enjoy disliking her. Like you, I enjoy hating O'Brien, but now that we've seen the soft side of Thomas, I don't want to go back. Now maybe one of the new footmen will take over the role of scheming villain
