A NZ movie based on a British book... and only the USA will get the DOS Sneak Peek? Can't Post

As the release dates for BluRay in Europe are not before April (for instance, April 8 in UK), effectively it means that only US viewers will be actually capable of seeing the sneak peek of The Desolation of Smaug in its live and unedited form.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is somewhat unfair? Come on, it's a New Zealand movie based on a British book, after all.

Well, it's backed by US companies [In reply to] Can't Post

Warner Brothers, in particular, so of course the U.S. will get first look. The US is the primary market, it seems, even if it's produced in New Zealand. Game Of Thrones is an American show even though it is filmed in Ireland, Morocco, and Iceland, and its cast is primarily British/Irish. It all depends on who's backing the production, and what they want done with it.

Rubbish isnt it? So annoyed about it. [In reply to] Can't Post

Every single Hobbit fan wants to see the DOS sneak peek live, and tbh, this was 90% of the reason for my buying the DVD.

Now basically WB has given a big ''Middle finger'' to everyone outside of the US. I cant understand why they cant wait till its released everywhere and then do it. Surely that isnt too hard to do?

It makes me sad that theres this kind of nonsense around a film and series i adore.

90%? That was fast. [In reply to] Can't Post

This feature was announced like .. less than a week ago, along with the rest of the extras. And it that quickly escalated to 90% of the reason you were going to drop $30 on the Blu-Ray (is that live feature even available on the DVD?). So, before that feature was announced, there was only a 10% possibility of you buying it? Why buy it then. Just don't. There. The movie was only 1/10th of the reason you wanted it anyway, so, what's the point?

Yeesh. I'm sure in 2013, no one would ever record the live feed and put it on youtube, or one of the other million video hosting sites, so who cares. I'm waiting for the EE.

All about money [In reply to] Can't Post

Waiting to release the Blu-Ray in every country simultaneously will cost them money. These films have one goal and one goal only: to make as much money as possible. Any bonuses like the film being good and having scenes accurate to the book are just to help the one and only goal.

However, do not fret: the extra scenes will hit the internet before you know it. You could also get a Region A Blu-Ray player, buy the Blu-Ray online and have it shipped to you if you must own the physical copy early.

Warner BluRays are codefree... [In reply to] Can't Post

...therefore, no Region A player required.

However, it is highly unlikely that a BluRay from USA would arrive in time (19th is release date; 24th is the DoS Sneak Peek).

PS: New Line did not have any problems with a simultaneous DVD release for the LOTR movies worldwide - although the market was segmented between several independent labels in different countries as opposed to a major like WB.

The fact that its going to be on YT is irrelevant. Its the principle and its rubbish. [In reply to] Can't Post

They know there are Tolkien fans world wide hungering for the latest DOS peaks. So how awesome would a live webcast from PJ and the DOS footage be to watch? Awesome enough for me to bother to buy the DVD (and lets face it, thats the only reason they are doing this little gimmick, to get people to buy the DVD). I can understand the US getting the DVD release before the rest of the world, that isnt the point.

Limiting this awesome, one time, PJ and DOS event to ONLY US residents is just really crappy. Theres no convincing me otherwise on that, its a crappy move.

P.S Dont get too hung up on the 90% thing, i wasnt using exacts.

It's because the United States is the best country in the world! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm kidding, I'm kidding!

This is a really strange move, to be honest. The Hobbit was released in Europe and New Zealand before the U.S., so it's not like the U.S. has a history of being favored with these films. Hopefully this will be clarified later. It really isn't fair to host the first sneak peak of The Hobbit and then only invite one country. Frown

all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us...

Won't matter... [In reply to] Can't Post

...there will be a ton of illegal versions up for download within a few hours, and many descriptions up even quicker. The edited version will be up for everyone shortly after that. It's just a way to move product in the US very quickly.
