Time for a Tauriel thread! (minor spoilers?)

Hi all, I've been trying to find some information about this character but it's a bit hard separating the fact from the speculation. Here's what little I've been able to gather: Does anyone want to confirm/deny these points, or add to them? Anyway, I've been wondering about her role. Is there some kind of competition between her and Legolas? Is Kili supposed to develop a crush on her? Will she be at the Battle of Five Armies? What does everyone think? I must admit that at first I had some misgivings about Tauriel's inclusion, but I think I'll wait and see what they do with her character. They have two more movies to fill after all, so I guess it's expected that there would be such additions. I just hope she doesn't steal the show too much. Between thirteen Dwarves and several major characters who have yet to appear (Beorn, Bolg, Dain), there's a lot of character development yet to be had!

I am convinced she is going to "pull a Haldir" and die, probably at TBof5A. I have absolutely no scientific evidence to back this up, just a hunch. My reasons: 1) It would be circular to have a pretty elf die. 2) She is a made up character, and it would tie up the loose end of her non-presence later on in the stories (like she never existed!). 3) She could somehow be involved in the Kili endgame, perhaps as a meta-version of the existing narrative (Kili protecting Thorin, so she is protecting Kili--Fili has to get his own elf). 4) It would balance to have a female character die, since we are going to have plenty of male characters drop like flies. Again, no evidence, just my own reckless posting. Thoughts?

I still think that this was probably just a joke that has gotten out-of-hand. I doubt that there really will be a romantic relationship between the two.

Since she's a warrior elf, there might not be too much focus on her gender, more on her archery ability. Which he would admire.

I don't want to see a lot of Tauriel/Kili moments. But, well, maybe it can be done well. I don't want them to even be overly friendly. Awkward, grudging attraction on Kili's part and amusement on Tauriel's part will be okay for me though -- as long as it's nothing near serious!

How's this: Tauriel has been taking archery lessons from Legolas every since she was a child and is his star pupil. Legolas is smitten with her, and she with him, but they daren't reveal their true feelings to others since he is of royal blood and she is but a common elf. Thranduil finds out about his son's longings and sends him away to scout the Wilds with Aragorn, hoping he will find a nice elf lass in Rivendell and forget about Tauriel. Since she is such a superior archer, while Legolas is absent, Thranduil makes her the Captain of the Guards, hoping she might be killed in battle one day. When the dwarves enter Thranduil's territory, he takes them captive just out of principle; however, recognizing Thorin as the grandson of Thror, the one whom he betrayed by turning his back and his elk's backside on them when they were fleeing Erebor, he feels guilty. He reluctantly accepts the dwarves as unwanted guests, and lets them linger a while in his forest. Kili is awed by Tauriel's archery skills, and takes a few lessons from her. He finds himself admiring her in spite of the fact that she is one of 'the enemy', as his Uncle Thorin says, that she is more than a foot taller than he, and that she is a vegan. When Uncle Thorin hears about Kili's attraction to Tauriel, he flies into a rage and goes to Thranduil to put a stop to their archery lessons. Thorin and Thranduil discover they have something in common after all: they both want to be rid of Tauriel. Thranduil decides to send her into exile somewhere far, far away, which is just fine with Thorin, as long as it isn't anywhere near Erebor. Thranduil summons her and pronounces his judgment. She falls to her knees, weeping and begging to stay with the rest of the Woodland elves...her kin. Just at that moment Legolas returns, sees what is transpiring, and exchanges angry words with his father. It escalates into physical blows (Thorin is greatly amused by all this), but when Legolas has his father in a fierce headlock, Thranduil spits out the real reason why he doesn't want a romance between Legolas and Tauriel. Tauriel is Thranduil's illegitmate child....by a dwarf mother! Everyone is so stunned that they decide to let bygones be bygones: Thorin and Company leave the Woodland realm quickly and in peace, Legolas is reinstated as the Captain of the Guards, and Tauriel decides to leave and seek her fortune in the North by making and selling hand-crafted bows and arrows. Preferably with lots of gold inlay. And gems, if she can find them. Um....so there you have it. What say you?

I'd pay just to see the two blondies grappling for a headlock...never mind the denouement. And you've built in a bonus -- seeing Thorin smile again!

... however, I would not mind the two of them being quite pro-Elf/pro-Dwarf. They are both (relatively speaking) young - I guess - and could both have issues understanding the mutual hate all the others have twoards members of the other species. This could also itensify the Kili/Thorin relationship, give it some drama - and make the sad stories of TABA even more heart-breaking.

I don't necessarily think it's going to be a romance, I mean maybe he might think she's pretty but I tend to think /hope if there is some sort of meaningful interaction between them, it'll be more like he'll admire her skill, maybe she'll be somewhat kind, she might be surprised dwarves are able to do more than clumsily bash things in and he may well be the most open to interacting with her. As I understand it she's supposed to be something of a favorite of Thranduil, or she's close to or admires him and of course Thorin and Kili are close and Kili clearly admires his uncle - so it would be sort of like seeing that their "heroes" have blind spots and if they could be wrong about how terrible elves/dwarves are, what else might they be wrong about?

She and Legolas appear on the scene to save the dwarves from the spiders! She turns to Legolas: " I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here." A spider then jumps out from the shadows and quickly mutilates her. Legolas runs away and is never seen in The Hobbit again. The dwarves then escape as per the events of the book.

specially the part where the spiders get rid of Tauriel. I do not think we need this made up character. I don't mind Legolas being there, since he lives in his father's realm. It should be interesting seeing him in his natural element. Legolas being there is an addition but not a change. However, I don't think he should be the one saving the Dwarves from the spiders. That is Bilbo's job in the book.

I have one more concern, well I´m very negative lately. I saw the photo where Legolas and Bard appear, and then you have Tauriel and Kili and they are archers too, I dont know but, if they do too much awesome killing with arrows, maybe when Bard´s moment arrives another arrow moment would be too much?

1. We know she's involved in some scenes with the spiders 2. She'll be at Thranduil's palace and in some way is involved with the discovery of the escape 3. She'll show up at the Battle of Five Armies The Kili/Tauriel encounter, if there is one, could have been exaggerated from one line exchange by Kili to his brother, like "Cor, she's tall, isn't she?" "When has that ever stopped you brother?" all in a joking fashion, of course. Or it simply could have been that Kili was about to get killed by a spider, and her arrow takes it out. 'Thanks!' There's a quick look, and maybe a smile...that's it. Anything else is wishful thinking

"Thorin and Thranduil discover they have something in common after all: they both want to be rid of Tauriel. " Perfect. But you forgot the subplot involving Fili's jealousy that Kili is spending so much more time now with Tauriel than with him. Fili and Uncle Thorin had had a falling out over Thorin's inability to tell him apart from Kili when the stone giant crashed ("You were crying out for Kili, but it was me who almost got killed! You love him more than me!!"). When Kili started taking "archery lessons" *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* from Tauriel, Fili was horribly mad at his little brother for abandoning him in favor of "the enemy". But then when Thorin and Thranduil discovered they had something in common after all, Fili jumped right on that bandwagon too, and was reconciled with his uncle, who decided Fili was, after all, his favorite nephew.

Based on this and other posts in this thread, it seems that the whole Kili thing (at least in terms of it being a romance) is just speculation then? I can still see them developing a connection based on them both being archers, but in a chummy kind of way. (Tauriel's just one of the guys! ) I wonder where Legolas comes in though? If Tauriel is supposed to be some kind of bigshot, I can imagine them trying to outcompete each other's crazy stunts. Imagine the Legolas action scenes in LotR and double them... yikes! The biggest mystery for me has got to be her role at the Battle of the Five Armies. I wonder if she'll have a story arc there too, or just kind of show up, kick butt, then leave?
