Stopping "Today in Middle-earth" Calendar reminders Can't Post

I can't figure out how to turn off the calendar reminders. Even if I delete them and tell them not to repeat, they carried over from last year to this. What can I do to turn them off??

Also, there is one that says "want more time?" And it keeps repeating almost daily but all it is is a link toTORn. Very annoying!

are you talking about the google calendar? [In reply to] Can't Post

If so, that's a google setting.

See if this helps:

I don't know [In reply to] Can't Post

There is no indication where it's coming from on my iPhone, and when I log in to Google, it does not show up on my calendar there. So 'm really not sure. Do you have a link to where you would sign up for it initially?

Thanks for your help.

Google calendar can be tricky to work with [In reply to] Can't Post

First... did you visit the page I linked to and follow the directions in that page? I can't tell from your post if you've done that. If not, will you do that next and report back on what you found?

Yes, I tried it. [In reply to] Can't Post

What I was saying was that I can't do what the help link said because when I open my Google Calendar, the events are not on the calendar, and on the left side, there is no "middle-earth" calendar for me to turn the notifications off. So I am baffled. I faintly remember getting an email from TORn about adding the calendar, but don't remember exactly how I did it. I looked through all my apps to see if it was an app, but I don't see it there. I need to find the source. That's why I was asking if you had a link to where you go when you first sign up to add the calendar.

a few things [In reply to] Can't Post

You say, 'when you open Google Calendar, the events are not on the calendar'.

This sounds like an action that is different from going to settings. For example, here's what I see when I go to Google Calendar:

Here's what I see when I find and click the gear icon (top right), choose settings (in your pull down menu), and then choose calendars (one of four 'tabs' - General | Calendars | Mobile Setup | Labs):

You'll notice that, in Settings>Calendars, I can find two calendars which do not show up in my main Google calendar interface. It is here that I would click on the TIME calendar and change my settings for notification.

I would be very surprised if you can't find the TIME calendar in your *settings* interface (not your normal Google calendar interface).

Here are some home page stories about the TIME google calendar. Perhaps this is what you are looking for.

Introducing the TheOneRing.net Events Calendar
Today in Middle-earth History Calendar
T.I.M.E. Today In Middle-Earth History Calendar
Subscribe to Today in Middle-earth using iCal or XML

But I am 100% certain that what you need is to monkey with your Google calendar settings and/or your phone settings. This is not something that, ultimately, TORn controls. It's like my signing up for an RSS feed to a blog. The blog doesn't control whether I get notifications or not, I do through my RSS interface.

Still no luck [In reply to] Can't Post

Magpie,

I am so appreciative of your help with this. Thanks for posting the screen caps.

Well, I tried that, and the Middle-earth calendar is not there. I got to thinking maybe I had another Google account that the calendar was associated with, so I recovered several other Gmail addresses I had but none of them have the calendar attached to it either. Maybe I have another one that isn't associated with my recovery email, and I don't remember it that the calendar is attached to. Or maybe somehow it's attached through iTunes. I've tried every setting on my phone, too, and nothing helps. I'll keep working on it, but if you think of any other possibilities, let me know.

Thanks again for your time.

My last ditch efforts [In reply to] Can't Post

...keep in mind that I don't have a cell phone so I'm not very versed in these things. From my experience with my husband's, the do function very differently than computers.

If you are getting an email message of some sort, is there *anything* in that message that can tell you what account this is associated with? For example, I have multiple email accounts that all get channeled to one account. To determine which email account (of mine) any message came from, I have to look in the details for the email. I might think that my primary gmail account is getting messages from Company X but it's really my work account that is getting them.

Also, when we were traveling, I wanted to check my gmail from my husband's phone. In trying to do that, I *think* I was asked if I wanted the phone to sync with that account. I said yes. That worked fine while we were traveling but then my husband started getting alerts/reminders for all the events in my calendar and all the events in my son's calendar (which showed up in that first interface I showed you... it was his work schedule so I could plan dinners).

Now, I was not set up to receive alerts/reminders for these events. I didn't get them on my computer (and I know how to do that and do that for some events).

The solution for this problem was perhaps easier than yours will be. We simply stopped syncing my gmail account to his phone since I didn't need to check emails on it once we were home.

But that 'alert' action was prompted by his phone. If you haven't looked around other help issues for google calendars, I'd do that next:
http://support.google.com/calendar/?hl=en
One of them might address phone issues.

And if you can get into your phone to check what accounts it might be syncing with, that might be helpful.

And while talking about syncing, this may not have anything to do with this issue but I used Chrome both at work and at home for browsing. And I sign into my personal gmail account at work so google knew who I was at work. I once saw a link for syncing Chrome and, misunderstanding what it would do, I clicked it. It synced all my passwords and bookmarks from home onto my work computer. Yikes! I did not want that. I had to figure out how to unsync the two computers then I had to go in and sort out what was work passwords and bookmarks and what was my personal ones and make sure my personal ones were deleted.

I bring this up because google can be kind of 'tricky' like this. I don't mean to imply they are tricking us. Only that if we have a lot of google accounts (and I do... gmail, google groups, Chrome, Picasa, google docs, etc.) and we access some of those accounts on multiple computers or devices, then the potential to get things muddled up is high. And it can take a great effort to understand how that happened and unmuddle them (I think I spent 2 hours on the Chrome issue).

And... on the off chance you can and do use Chrome on your phone, perhaps the syncing came from that direction somehow.

If you have exhausted all ideas about google accounts, syncing with google accounts, etc. then maybe your phone provider can help you problem solve. They should at least be able to help you dig into your phone to find settings I'd have no clue about. My son worked for awhile in iPhone support and they're supposed to stick with you till they solve the problem.

Google has help forums which I find are only mildly useful. But google search can sometimes help. Have you done a google search for: >> stop google calendar reminders on iphone <<

Or, maybe there's a iPhone support forum somewhere. Other users can be a great help sometimes.

Good luck. If you don't mind, if you solve the problem, could you post the solution here? Then if someone else comes by with a similar problem, we'll have your solution to offer them.

(edit to add: I've put out a general call for anyone on TORn staff with an iPhone that can help. I don't know if we have any, but you might want to 'watch' this thread so you are notified when replies are made. Of course, you have to have your preferences set to receive email notification. :-) alternately, you could just keep checking for a week or so.)

Try this [In reply to] Can't Post

Click on your Calendar icon.
Click on the "Calendars" button in the upper left.

Are any calendars listed that may be just the Today in Middle-earth items? If so, uncheck it.

It is possible that you imported those items into another one of your calendars. If so, you would need to delete the items that you imported.

Settings in the Calendar [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the suggestion! By clicking only on the Calenders button and selecting "Home" calendar, it hides the Middle-earth entries, but if I want to see them, they appear when I click on "Calendar".

It still does not solve the mystery of which calendar the Middle-earth calendar is attached to, but it's actually a better solution.

Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

Corvar had a suggestion that is a work-around that will do well. I am going to try some of your suggestions to try and figure out where the calendar is actually originating from. If I figure it out I'll let you know. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to explore this so thoroughly!

This was one suggestion I got by email [In reply to] Can't Post

It may be the same as others suggested here or something you've already tried. I'm just going to copy and paste it on the off hand that it is different and will work.

this page -> https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect
You log in with your google account and it will show you all calendars
available in your google account, yours and the shared ones. You just
uncheck those you don't want to sync with your iPhone and be happy
forever with alerts for only your schedule.

Disable specific calendar on your iPhone:
You go to the main screen of the Calendar application (not Settings)
and click the top left button named "Calendars". This will show you
all calendars and you can select all those you want to show in your
calendar or not.

Adjust alert settings in Google Calendar:
The iPhone converts "Email reminders" into thos annoying pop up
reminders on the phone. Visit http://m.google.com to configure sync settings
to have your phone include syncing with this calendar

1. Log into your calendar, either on google apps, or http://calendar.google.com
2. On the left, notice the section "Other Calendars". These are the
calendars that can optionally be shown on the iphone, and are causing
the unwanted notifications.
3. Click on the arrow next to the calendar you want to change, and
click 'notifications' in the drop-down menu.
4. On this preferences screen, clear all notifications in the 'event
reminders' section.
5. Save Changes.
