but it wouldn't be a stretch to think he suspected Bilbo had discovered something in there to help him.
Gandalf probably wanted to keep his suspicions under wraps until he could discern a little more about the situation. His interruption of the Dwarves secured this, and additionally it would have been neither the time nor the place to discuss it at that particular moment.
