If you can't get to New Zealand to see the Shire... Can't Post

You can still visit the 1970's era kitschy Hobbiton USA in the tiny hamlet of Phillipsville, California, off Highway 101.

The Hobbit Trail, as we came to know it, was a perennial stop on vacations we took in the area. Apprenatly its sadly run down and not open to the public any longer, but here's some information if you find yourself driving past it. Maybe some enterprising millionaire will buy the land and restore it.

I've been there! [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe 10, 15 years ago, I forget, but I've walked through that little Hobbiton set. I just came across it once on a drive and decided to stop and check it out. It was three parts kitschy mixed with one part magical (how many times have *you* stumbled into Hobbiton when driving through an ancient forest?). My memory of it's a bit hazy, but I do remember Gandalf and Smaug. Neat -- I'd completely forgotten about that place.

Yes, been there several times because we were in the area for business [In reply to] Can't Post

We used to tour a season of Shakespeare to the Garberville area, so it became a sort of pilgrimage.

It once had a series of recorded messages that guided you through the adventure from Bilbo's house (where Gandalf stands) to the Lonely Mountain and back to the gift shop. The narration was rather hilarious. The most bizarre being the final recording box that would say. "And so Bilbo returned to his nice, safe hobbit hole...as you now return to the parking lot..." or something to that effect. It was amazingly kitschy.
