The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey dipped 50 percent to $13.2 million this weekend. So far, it has grossed over $920 million worldwide, and will likely get to $1 billion after opening in China in late February.

Germany [In reply to] Can't Post

Nice to see that the Hobbit is set to be the #1 movie of 2012 here and potentially the highest of the franchise (not adjusted, of course) :)

Sweden's AUJ gross has out-grossed Japan with more than 3 million dollars. What is going on?

Inhabitants in Japan ~ 127 500 000
Inhabitants in Sweden ~ 9 500 000

The Hobbit is the movie of the year, here [In reply to] Can't Post

Definately, it crushed Skyfall by far already and it's run in cinema isn't nearly over.

Tolkien is huge in Scandinavia.

How did you find info on ticket sales [In reply to] Can't Post

Some countries report admissions. [In reply to] Can't Post

Some don't.

Here's the 2012 top 100 for Germany (Hobbit is 4th actually):

At least in Germany... [In reply to] Can't Post

... there is some data on that. I don't think the data is realeased for the US, at least that is what someone else said in an earlier thread.

The last figure I saw for the Hobbit in Germany was between 5 and 6 Million - however that is already outdated. But it is true that it won't be #1 when it comes to ticket sales.

But one can start the whole cycle-debate again what numbers would show/prove what and how what can be compared to what under which circumstances.

But to make one thing clear... [In reply to] Can't Post

... before any useless discussion starts again ;) :

I just posted this out of joy that the Hobbit seems to do good in my home-country, which I was not too sure of before the release because media coverage and stuff can be a bit random, weak and "negative" here from time to time with no apparant reason. Not so for the Hobbit, it was even quite well received by some critics of the magazines that felt pretty anti-fantasy 10 years ago with LotR.

So there was no hidden agenda to make the success of the Hobbit to anything more than it is. Although some people are very devoted here to make sure it won't be seen even one bit more positive than it deserves ;)

Oh i didnt mean anything by it [In reply to] Can't Post

Other than its a nice way to see how it compares just in a different way.

One would expect if it has more ticket sales that it would have made more money (adjusting for inflation, etc etc). I personally feel with new records coming pretty regularly now, it would be nice if they could give both the BO takings and the number of admissions - obviously if one is falling (admissions - in some countries) but BO takings are going up/ or can be spun to look like they are then the studios will pick whichever gives of the most positive light. Would be nice to have both though, lol.

It has also done remarkably well in the UK where it has topped the UK movie charts for 4 consecutive weeks and will become the 4th movie of the year (15th overall) to make $1 billion. In the UK we have of course had the mega hit of Skyfall - which i am kinda surprised by, not because its a bad film, it is really good, but because the other James Bond films in my time have been successful but nothing like this latest one.
