Hello, friends at TORN! I am trying to find out on what date Smaug was killed (ie - Jan ___ ? Feb ___ ? ...) - can anyone help me? Thank you so much for your help! I know Gramma made an awesome calendar of Tolkien events, and I can't seem to find it ...

By the Shire Calendar(I believe) the date shows Oct 25, 1973
By the regular Calendar the date should be the same, but the year would be 2941.
This is what I found by checking Google. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone else will give you the correct answer. ^_^

I'd appreciate it if you could carry the link in your footer.
When they had it on the front page, I tried to access it a number of times so I could look up a date quickly. But I could only figure out how to access that day's entries.
Now they took it off the front page entirely (I have to wonder if they know how long the three of us.. mostly you... worked on creating that thing!).

From the LotR Appendix E:
It appears, however, that Mid-year's Day was intended to correspond as nearly as possible to the summer solstice. In that case the Shire dates were actually in advance of ours by some ten days, and our New Year's Day corresponded more or less to the Shire January 9.
I focused on this in an old RR discussion. Whenever a fan wants to associate Tolkien's calendrical system with the dates we live by today, he or she would do well to consider the above note by Tolkien. All our dates, across the year, are 9 or 10 days ahead of the Middle-earth dates that are given in English as if they were the same. As he puts it, January 9 in the Shire is really January 1 for us.
Thus, if we say that Smaug was killed on October 25, 2941 T.A. within the story, that date should be thought of as being about October 15 in our own time. (I say "about", because the adjustment depends on the various solstices and equinoxes throughout the year, and I don't know the exact calculations required for any given date.) November 1 would translate to around October 22, likewise.

Since Tolkien didn't provide an exact date, the best we can say is that Smaug is killed in the evening of the second day of the Dwarves' new year. The Dwarven New Year fell on the first day of the last new crescent moon of Autumn. Durin's Day was a Dwarven New Year's day when both the sun and moon shone in the sky at the same time.

There was more than one shooter that took down Smaug. We'll have to watch the background when Bard looses the arrow.
