I had never made it through Silmarillion as a kid, so when I came back to it a few years ago, I read it and subsituted in The Children of Hurin where appropriate. I enjoyed The Children of Hurin far more than the rest of the Silmarillion, though having context for the story definitely helped. I'm not a big fan of the writing style for Sil, but Children of Hurin reads like a novel, not a history lesson, so it's far more engaging. Still very different from The Hobbit or LotR, of course.
all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us...
