Since there are so many posts already about what people don't like, I thought I'd start a thread about what people DID like. This is a non-judgmental thread, please! If you don't like what someone else does, please don't post your opinion about it- just post what you did like, instead. I want this to be a fun thread :) Guess I'll start:
My favorite scene was at the end when Thorin hugs Bilbo and apologizes (aww, bromance!). It gave a depth to his character that hadn't been there before, and really made me like him.

My favorite scene was the Thorin-stepping-off-the-burning-tree to fight Azog scene. The drama! RA's expression and body language, Azog's ditto, the music, the flames all around - it was spectacular.

Thorin is such a bad*** character. I also wanted to say that I love Martin Freeman's acting in both of these scenes. His nonverbal acting is superb. After they have landed at the carrock, you can see the disappointment on his face when it looks like Thorin is dead, and his sheer relief when he sees that he is not. I could watch the ending of that a hundred times :)

A couple of standouts for me:
The prologue --- Erebor was aesthetically amazing and glorious. The Smaug attack was also intense.
Frodo and Bilbo --- its hard not to have a big smile during this scene, it made me very nostalgic and it was very nice to see Wood again.
Gandalf giving Sting to Bilbo --- perfectly acted, and very heart-warming. Kind of the part of AUJ where the "moral of the story" is slipped in. A nice parallel to Frodo and Gandalf's heart-to-heart conversation in Moria about the same topic in FOTR.
However, and I think alot of folks will agree, the true standout is Riddles in the Dark. Very intense, un-nerving, and even slightly funny. Serkis is spot-on. And it culminates in a near perfect visualization of "pity staying Bilbo's hand"; that part looked almost exactly like how I imagined it.

Many great scenes to choose from'the whole of the prologue is very cleverly done and if you read 'durins folk from the appendices of ROTK there are a couple of moments brought to life from there....but I suppose its got to be the end as the thrush flies past them,thorin says 'we'll take it as a sign' and then the camera sweeps up over the desolation towards erebor and follows the thrush up past the gate as its knocks echo round the vast hall....and we all know what comes next awesome and fantastic!!!! A moment that sends chills up the spine.

But one of my faves is the whole Troll sequence. Bilbo trying to distract the Trolls till Gandalf can arrive.
"You have to.......SKIN them first!"
"That one has worms.....in his.....tube.... They're all infected! Really, I wouldn't try it if I were you."
Martin's expressions are perfect! And the reactions from the other Dwarves. That whole scene makes me laugh every time!

Those are some of the very best scenes. Another scene that is one of my very favorites is Gandalf and Galadriel's scene after the dwarves leave Rivendell. Gandalf's dialogue about the small things is wonderful, and Galadriel's response in so motherly and wonderful. The music in that part is great too! A mix between the beginning of the "Breaking of the Fellowship" song and the Frodo and Sam music made that part perfect!
One other thing: Middle-earth (or New Zealand) in all of it's glory with the Misty Mountains theme playing as the dwarves travel Wilderland in not one but two epic scenes! When Gandalf says "Home is now behind you, the world is ahead" and when their actually trekking "Over the Misty Mountains" themselves with the music was just awesome.

I completely agree about Bilbo, Freeman was great in this scene. I absolutely love the moment where Bilbo has killed the Orc that was sent to finish Thorin off, and Bilbo is standing between Thorin and the approaching Warg riders, and waves Sting at them rather as he had waved it at Gollum. His body language and expression are brilliant!

First you tell us we aren't allowed to be negative, then you belittle the developing relationship between Bilbo and Thorin by calling it bromance.
... or are you saying that after the hug you realized you are bromantically inclined towards Thorin?
Now it is a fun thread.

...as I am a female ;) Nah, I wasn't belittling it. It's a joke my friends and I made when we saw it- it's more fun when you don't have to take a movie completely seriously. But it doesn't mean that I don't love that scene, and will cry my eyes out as the story progresses away from that. Just like when Balin is giving the story of the battle for Moria, we talked about how Thorin has an awesome "backstory pose", as he gazes out over the mountains looking cool as Balin tells the story. We left the theater practicing our "backstory poses".

I love that scene. And especially Gollums facial expression in it. You can see every emotion raging over his face, the despair of the loss of the ring, the angst of not having it anymore, the anger it is gone, the rage against Bilbo who took it. And all those expressions and more following up each other.
And Bilbo's reaction to it. When the anger is there his motivation to strike with Sting, but when the despair comes up his hesitation and the decision to leave him and just jump over him.
So well done!

The song sung by the dwarves in Bag end - very atmospheric and very fitting. I dont think i can read that passage in the book now without fitting it to how they sung it and its way better than anything i came up with.
I love the look of Bilbo as he is in his room contemplating what to do, should he stay or go, (thinking about how he has his own home and loves it and this is something the dwarves want desperately), before it drifts of to the fire.
(if i can count it as the same scene) i would then say the very next one of bilbo when he wakes up - quietly sneaks around his own home, looking to see if the dwarves are there or all gone. I love how he is so happy they are gone but then the Took side of him comes out and he feels like he has missed a real opportunity for adventures, adventures he wished for when a young hobbit. Was acted brilliantly by MF.

Bilbo's scene with Bofur was key to Bilbo's arc. He begins to realize his sympathy for the Dwarves for not having a home, except the home that was stolen from them. May not have been in the book, but the scene brilliant in its pathos - Bofur's expression was heart-breaking - and both actors turned in beautiful, nuanced performances.

Character moments such as this one were in short supply. The film needs some more.

Absolutely blew me away. Riddles in the Dark and the Bilbo/Bofur scene were both excellent as well. Notice how all the great scenes were free of unnecessary, forced humor.

Love alot but some that havent been mentioned as much:
Mctavishes' delievery of, "That will be the door". Just love it everytime.
Martin's expression when he realises the danger he is in after Gollum loses the ring. Followed the swift yet shakily raised Sting.
Finally, when Bilbo is happy the Dwarves have left. The totally lack of any noise or score (One of the few times ever when no score adds more depth), just shows Bilbo how boring his life is and how lonely he must feel. Nothing but him, his house, his belongings and a (near) missed opportuinty.

1) The entire sequence from when Dwalin arrives at Bag End until Bilbo runs out his door:
I look forward to this so much with every viewing! But within this sequence, my favorite moments are Bilbo's unsuccessful attempts to get the dwarves out of his pantry, the arrival of Fili & Kili (love Kili scraping his boot on Bilbo's mother's chest), Thorin's grand entrance (!!), and the dwarves singing the Misty Mountain song.
2) The entire Troll sequence, particularly when Bilbo tells them how to best cook a dwarf (and Thorin's kicking the two dwarves who don't get what Bilbo is trying to do).
3) When Bilbo tries to sneak off back to Rivendell and has his talk with Bofur....Bofur's sad expression when Bilbo reminds him the dwarves have no home.
4) The Riddles in the Dark sequence, particularly when Gollum, having lost the last question, falls over on his side in despair.
5) Martin Freeman's gorgeous performance when Bilbo decides to spare Gollum's life.
6) Bilbo coming to the defense of the fallen Thorin.
7) The flight of the eagles carrying all the dwarves & Gandalf. In 3D HFR it's absolutely phenomenal!
8) And yup, in the end, Thorin's words to Bilbo as if he were going to berate him once again...then the apology and the hug.
