Fabulous list! [In reply to] Can't Post

And traitorous as it feels, I so agree with number 4.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

My list [In reply to] Can't Post

I am happy that we have the TH films because

1. Martin Freeman's Bilbo. Back when he was Arthur Dent, upon seeing Hitchhiker's Guide in the theater, I "called" it. He was my Bilbo, I declared. I am happy to find I was quite right about that.

2. Dwarves rock! Great to see them fleshed out, especially the ones who didn't get much focus in the books, like Bofur who is my favorite so far.

3 Gandalf's back--and lets himself get ragged on! I thought it was great how he's taken down a peg a couple of times at the beginning. Like when he coughts awkwardly when questioned about his Dragon-slaying credentials. ALso when Bilbo asks, tartly: "Is Radagast a great wizard? Or is he more like you?" Laugh I admired how Sir Ian played him as perfectly cool and unflappable about it, and totally humble.

4. Meeting Radagast and his critter buddies. Seeing Radagast as an effective wizard, when he's focused.

5. Seeing the White Council in "action" (by which I mean talking, but in a good way).

6. Finally being back "in" Middle-earth, and having 2 more "visits" to look forward to!

7. Enjoying the return trip to Middle-earth with others, and talking about it with others who enjoyed it, or even just to discuss it.

8. The soundtrack! Esp. the Mountain theme! Also blunt the knives!

9. Gollum's back! that whole scene was electrifying!

10. Being introduced to new settings in Middle-earth: Dale, Erebor, a new perspective on Rivendell, the Stone Giants' Pass, Goblin-town.

A bag is like a hole that you can carry with you.

Yes... [In reply to] Can't Post

If only for bringing a near-perfect Unexpected Party complete with two dwarf songs.

Gandalf, Bilbo & Balin were all excellent as well, and I'm glad to have seen them on film.

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

Yes and no [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not glad that there are three of them (still seems excessive to me) but I am glad that some form of Hobbit films exist. My top reasons:

1. All the build-up and discussion with fellow fans
2. Seeing Middle-earth on the big screen again
3. Finally getting a movie after so many years of anticipation
4. Seeing aspects of the book realized on film that have not appeared in other adaptations (Beorn, Arkenstone, Stone-giants, Azanulbizar, etc.)
5. Martin Freeman, the best Bilbo possible
6. All our returning players, especially Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis
7. New and welcome faces like Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Benedict Cumberbatch
8. Singing Dwarves!

Thank you :-) and what might be a simpler mnemonic [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah, I get confused too.

Maybe instead of an acronym, we break it down into syllables.

Az An Ul Bi Zar

Sounds kinda like "As Arnold, Bizarre" as in strange like the Terminator, former Governator guy.

Azog might be considered strange and bizarre--and seriously built, like the Terminator. So when you want to remember the syllables, think Azog and his muscular physique, then think Arnold, then think bizarre. As (or Az) Arnold Bizarre. Azanulbizar.

How's that? I think it's helped me--before, I tended to switch the last two syllables.

A bag is like a hole that you can carry with you.

That's some compliment! From you I've expected "really not"! Angelic

As for me - I haven't seen any of them yet (which i won't be able to say for much longer...); and even if I love them, I probably won't be considering that as "having the Hobbit films". On balance, I've liked Jackson's version of The Lord of the Rings; I expect to like The Hobbit as well. If I do - very nice, if not I've wasted some money and a few hours.

I don't remember: is this name ever mentioned in the film? [In reply to] Can't Post

For that matter, do the orc/goblin names Yazneg and Grinnah (do I have those correct?), which I'm almost certain are not mentioned, appear in the credits?

Are the other names in the movie that super-fans have learned, the even the most attentive ordinary viewer will not know, without doing research into the production?

Uh oh! [In reply to] Can't Post

A trick question :)

You know, I didn't really notice! I think Balin talks about the battle to reclaim Moria, but whether he identifies the battle as Azanulbizar I don't remember :(

Perhaps a more observant poster can tell us?

No, the battle isn't refereed to as Azanulbizar [In reply to] Can't Post

Not even the Battle of Moria for that matter. It's just said they tried to "retake Moria".

Thanks Loresilme :-) (with more: Thorin Oakenshield and Dain Ironfoot) [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a weakness for acronym puzzles, from when I used to spend way too much time playing Acrophobia, the acronym game. It was all about expanding acronyms. Below are two of mine that were inspired by one of Alessea Eruvande's SFTH games over a year ago:

THORIN OAKENSHIELD
The heir of riches invites nephews, or alternate kindred: explore, nab Smaug's hoard in Erebor, let die.

DAIN IRONFOOT
Dwarven ally is needed immediately! Roac, onward now, follow orders of Thorin!
