Has anyone read Harry Turtledove's Videssos Cycle?

He was "inspired" to write it as a continuation of LOTR into the 4th age while being careful to avoid copyright infringement...no orcs, trolls, elves etc...just humans....set into a Roman/Byzantium like world. What if the Witch King re-appeared etc. Of course, he had to make it his version without any JRRT references etc. but I wonder if any readers can elaborate more on this theme? I have not read it. http://turtledove.wikia.com/wiki/Empire_of_Videssos http://greenbooks.theonering.net/...arry_turtledove.html Authors like Terry Brooks took imitation pretty close to the line, I just wonder if Turtledove is successful in spirit rather than "rip off". Not to knock Brooks, he filled in a demand for this type of story in his own way.
