box office update Can't Post

$840,924,000 (Not sure if that includes current foreign numbers)

This places it at 32 all time. Not far off Fellowship.

Looks like it will be 5th for 2012 in the domestic chart and could make 4th world wide

That's alright [In reply to] Can't Post

People can let off some steam now, and "debate" how good or bad The Hobbit is doing. LaughWink

It still looks like the film will get to $1 billion quicker than Skyfall did.

In any case, I am having serious withdrawal symptoms, so I may have to go and watch it for a fifth time to boost ticket sales over here in the UK Wink

'I do not know what is happening. The reason of my waking mind tells me that great evil has befallen and we stand at the end of days. But my heart says nay; and all my limbs are light, and a hope and joy are come to me that no reason can deny. Eowyn, Eowyn, White Lady of Rohan, in this hour I do not believe that any darkness will endure!' And he stooped and kissed her brow.

... I wanted to wait a while so I won't get overload... but then I always think: "It will be hard to see it on the really big screens again, once it has left cinemas"... and then I am tempted to go again ;)

I think you might mean net. [In reply to] Can't Post

Gross revenue does not take into account any of the expenses to make and market a movie. Skyfall might have cost less to make, market and distribute, so I think you're trying to say that it doesn't need to take in as much revenue as The Hobbit to be more profitable.

There's no way that WB can be anything other than pleased with the first Hobbit movie's results. They know that most of their costs have been recouped, and the remaining expenses will not diminish the overall success of the franchise. There are still costs to be incurred, but they are small in comparison to the costs already booked to make the movies. Even if the revenues from the next two movies are the same as from this movie, they will be extremely profitable.

No, i meant gross revenue [In reply to] Can't Post

Of course to get profit you subtract all expenses but i didn't want to complicate matters further.

As for no way WB being anything other than pleased, again, we don't know their internal expectations.

...although they haven't yet put up the weekly article on intl. numbers.

Only 9 mil. North American for the weekend; it's still going to make it to 300 mil, I think, but it will take a good while to get there.

Movie's been tracking like 'I Am Legend' again ever since I talked confidently about passing TTT in some other thread.

I jinxed it! Wink

Everything after this film.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...will just be gravy. Production companies have loved this format ever since LotR racked up in the box office - take popular book series, make long movie series, but shoot close together or at the same time, release yearly and rake in the profit. It's amazing that just 12 years ago, this idea was thought of as too risky to attempt. Now it's the standard.
