Congrats, Rosie, and thanks so much in advance for your service! // [In reply to] Can't Post

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville

Friday it is! And four days onward --- promise! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll mark them in my calendar.

Melkor, as far as I recall the Ainulindale (by the way, how can one make the two dots over a vowel? My keyboard isn't equipped for that) --- could sing perfectly well but chose to produce dissonances and noise. But perhaps I'm not remembering it correctly --- after all, it's about four days since I last read it, and my memory is so bad I've even been tested for Alzheimer's a couple of years back but apparently don't have it. And I'm too lazy to retrieve the Silmarillion from among the dozen books in my bed.

That, by the way, is a perfectly good reason for being single and celibate --- I can keep lots of books in my bed, along with my panda bear, and no one objects or makes me remove them! Smile

How do those special glasses feel?

You had me worried there dernwyn, when the first smiley I saw was Unsure

Today I went on a road trip for class.
Yes, a road trip for class.
We were instructed to pick a cardinal direction, and drive for 30 minutes to an hour, then stop in a town and interact with the people of the town, then turn and do the same thing, making a square.
So we stopped at three small towns (one of them reallllly small, we were only able to find people working on an addition to the church) and talked to some cool people (and some with very strange convictions)

In other news, I got my first grad school acceptance: at Rice U!
They're flying me down at the beginning of February. Smile

How about a cup of hot chocolate?

I actually think of you outside of TORn every now and then because there is a magpie living somewhere in the vicinity and every time I see that bird it reminds me of you Smile

I wish you the very best of luck with your job application! Perhaps having done it on a 'Hobbit' day will enhance its chances....

Congratulations imin. Smile It's been a great week for everyone it seems.

So when do you start? If you can't convince your parents (good move I say!), is it possible to get funding at all? I applied for funding for this fieldwork and I managed to get over £2000. Hopefully you might be able to do the same.

I hear that Noobie Admins are in charge of the mop and drool bucket. Tongue

As for the Eruvandes, Grandma and Grandpa Eruvande "informed" us they were taking the Little Eruvandes back to their house for a sleepover tonight, so we find ourselves with a date night! Woo Hoo! I voted for The Hobbit, but Mr. Eruvande wants to see Skyfall. Since we are kidless, it's going to be Skyfall. Oh, well.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks Dan [In reply to] Can't Post

I dont start until August unfortunately as they only have that time for the start of placements - its a long way off but it gives me time to get in shape and also look for a house (when i know exactly where in Cumbria it is - that happens end of March), learn to drive etc.

Unfortunately there is no funding available it has nothing to do with universities as its a diploma created by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) and basically i am a big boy now and have to pay my way, haha.

The deadline for the application is next friday so i only have one week to get everything sorted for it if i am going to do it - ooh dont know what to do!

I have to decide on my postgrad studies by next friday, so only 6 days left for me. I would be able to do it one year later though, but it just seems a shame to not do it now.

My job is as a dentist - in the UK a newly qualified dentist has to go through what is called vocational training to work in the NHS.

Not too inquisitive - i am the same, haha.

Hope you have a great weekend and things are going well for you?

Hey! I plan on staying a student as long as I can ;-) [In reply to] Can't Post

TORn needs another donation button, for those of us that need a little financial help in research (or shopping!). Wink

It's a difficult one. Do you have to pay the money up-front, or can you apply and then pull out? The reason I did my PhD was because I knew if I worked for a year, there's no way I would want to go back into education. Luckily the decision for me was a lot easier - I got the PhD, and not the job that I applied for. Wink

Whatever you choose though, I'm sure it will be the right choice.

Haha a donate button for students would be fantastic! [In reply to] Can't Post

I will have to pay it all up front which for me is 2.5 months rent! If i pull out i lose either 10% if done well in advance or all of it, if within two weeks of the exam i think.

The diploma is to be done whilst working as clinical experience is necessary to be awarded the degree (is a diploma a degree or just called a diploma?)

What job were you going for had you got the job offer but no PhD place?

Sorry i must have worded it poorly [In reply to] Can't Post

I have just recently got my degree but the diploma is a post grad one.

It is not necessary for my job as a dentist but if i want to specialise in the future then it will give me an advantage over those who have not got it.

The way things are changing in the NHS and the restructuring of medical/dental careers means i think the mjdf (diploma) will become a requirement in the future to even apply for a specialty which are already unbelievably competitive.

I also just want to do it so it gives me extra confidence in my knowledge and abilities to give the best possible treatment for my patients and just generally be better at my job.

go for the PhD! [In reply to] Can't Post

sounds like a great opportunity. No one I know who ever got a PhD regretted the extra effort, but I know plenty who let the door close and now wish they hadn't.

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.
