Poll: Gandalf's best line? (movie)
"So you do all who live to see such times... but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to you."
"Fool of a took! Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!"
"I am Gandalf the White. And I come to you now, at the turn of the tide."
"A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins... nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."
"White shores... and beyond... a fair greeen country, under a swift sunrise." (that whole speech)
"Here at last, on the shores of sea... comes the end of our fellowship."
"You... shall not... PASS!"

Gandalf's best line? (movie) Can't Post

Title says it all, which of these would you say is Gandalf's best line throughout all the movies?

That was a pretty easy decision, although "I come to you now at the turn of the tide," is a strong second.

They all [In reply to] Can't Post

give me goosebumps. But I have to go with "All we have to decide..." It's one of the book and movie's very best lines. Makes me want to sit down and read and watch them all again.

Sorry mate!

lol just reminded me of a comic I saw, where Gandalf is falling into the abyss shouting, "I can't fly, you fools!"

I voted for the first one because [In reply to] Can't Post

it was echoing through my mind in the months before LotR came out. We'd just been through 9/11, and my mom was very ill, and those words kept me going.

Can't decide [In reply to] Can't Post

It's all tied up for me between: "So you do all who live to see such times... but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to you." (I should learn from this quote), "A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins... nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to." (Not sure why, I just always have to smile at that line), "Here at last, on the shores of sea... comes the end of our fellowship." (It just strikes a cord deep in my soul, though why I can't tell), and the speech about death to Pippin (Just beautiful).

"White shores" for me. [In reply to] Can't Post

Between how Gandalf says his lines and Shore's haunting music, it speaks to my soul and lends comfort to it.

Tough call, but I'll go with the first choice. [In reply to] Can't Post

I often think of that entire speech, especially after watching the news or hearing of some horrible tragedy. It gives me resolve and a sense of purpose, as well as reassurance that I'm "meant to be here" in this time and place.

So many to choose from [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't decide on this one, they were all pretty cool as were more besides. The Turning of the Tide remark was significant, because of course that's exactly what that moment was.

The most significant comment of all, not just by Gandalf but by any character, was, I always felt, the "Pity? It was pity that stayed his hand" speech, but it's not listed above. I don't blame you for that because I don't think that the hollywood director realised the emphasis that it was supposed to be given. But that speech by Gandalf went right to the heart and core and soul of the whole tale. Pity and mercy were symbolic of the difference between the two sides, and were also the reasons why, in the end, the free peoples triumphed over evil, desperately close though it was.

Swift sunrise... [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't think it would end this way.

End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... And then you see it.

What? Gandalf?... See what?

White shores... and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

Well, that isn't so bad.

No... No it isn't.

Come on, you cannot get any better than that...

I love the line [In reply to] Can't Post

that goes something like:"Understand this - things are now in motion that cannot be undone..." Spoken with such authority.

I also love the 'turn of the tide' line, but my all-time favourite is definitely the one about deciding what to do with the time you have been given. It's so significant in the film and makes me think about my own life, too.

The 'white shores..' conversation between Gandalf and Pippin makes me cry like a baby.

Because is such a heartbreaking moment and also, my borther and I used to fool around and repeat this line all the time! (we were just kids) I like very much what he says to the Balrog beafore saying that, I remember my friends who went to the movies with me and didn't read the book, asked me: what a hell is a flmae of Udun (or however you write that Tongue)

Tough choice [In reply to] Can't Post

but I went with his verbal drubbing of Pippin. I was going t pick the 1st one but in the book or movie the "fool of a took" line always makes me lol. The 1st choice offered is just massively on target; but I like to laugh so there you goCool
