When will we see a Desolation of Smaug trailer/sneak peak??

I saw Peter Jackson on the Colbert Report last month. At that time he said he had a nearly finished copy of the 2nd film on a thumb drive in his hotel. So putting out some sort of trailer or preview is something they are capable of doing right now. Anyone think they will put one together and attach it after the credits of the first Hobbit film in order to boost ticket sales in the coming month?

I was planning on seeing the movie again anyway, but I'd love to see it again with a trailer attached as a bonus. I never saw the Two Towers one that was shown after FotR. It sounds like we won't be getting an official trailer til the summer though. Hopefully there will be something with the blu-ray/dvd release of AUJ.

that said we should see our first glimpse about half way through the year. But I wouldn't discount one being attached to AUJ at the end of its theatrical one. As you said, just to get a few more dollars before its over. EDIT: here we go... http://www.vulture.com/...y-in-the-hobbit.html

One that I think fans are all definitely asking.
The marketing of the movies depends on interesting variables to be sure. Bear with my thinking below, if you will. My opinion is that The Hobbit movies don't have the same challenging perceptions/obstacles to overcome that the LOTR trilogy did. This isn't to say they don't have any challenges/obstacles. In fact, they do as we have already seen (good heavens just getting them made). Nevertheless, with the LOTR the following were some factors to consider in terms of how the film was marketed: - "Impossible book to adapt" - Getting a studio to buy into more than one movie for the adaptation. - A very small movie audience for the genre (fantasy) - The internet was in it's infancy, no social networking, no mobile devices (as they are today) - Slow turn around time on VHS and DVD distribution of the movies back then. So a lot of the marketing tactics (i.e. appending trailers on to the end of the existing movies while in theaters) was in an effort to keep interest alive. With the LOTR trilogy being a massive critical/fan success, Oscars, huge box office numbers, huge dvd sales etc. those movies cemented their place in movie immortality. The residuals are still huge for LOTR and new fans are gained yearly... through BluRay and internet streaming options (iTunes etc.) as well as all of the merchandising etc. So any derivative "content" is now instantly interesting to a large group of people. But flash forward to today. The Hobbit doesn't face some of those old obstacles: - "Impossible book to adapt" (I understand that there are some who disagree for both books.) It wasn't really a question of "if" but "when" for this latest adaptation. Thus anticipation is subsequently huge, predicated on previous success. - With that success, comes a built in huge fan base for these movies, something New Line was unassured of prior to the trilogy. - The internet is apart of our lives now. We don't move without it. Back then, magazines, newspaper, radio, and television were still major players in marketing. While they still have a say today, the internet is now the dominant player in marketing communication. It was in it's infancy when Fellowship was coming on the horizon. So with all of this being said, I'm not sure we will see an appended teaser/trailer for the second and final act. Maybe we will. I think it would be fun for the fans. PJ loves his fans. But I think he uses his production diaries or VLOGs as a direct connect now with the fan base as well as Facebook for fun little teaser moments. I think the trailer for part 2 won't pop up until the summer as stated. Part 1 has been a massive success financially (it will break the $1 Billion dollar mark when it's all said and done) and while critics may not have loved it, the majority of fans do... which is ultimately what counts. We already know there will be Extended Editions (PJ has said as much) and the turn around for BluRays is a lot faster than DVDs used to be. In other words, momentum will continue to build to part 2 so they don't really NEED to do what they used to. That doesn't mean they won't. Like I said, an appended teaser would be fun... but something tells me Peter is holding his cards a little closer to the chest. With the divisive criticism of 48fps, the less than positive critical review for part 1 (critics bore me), and now the "below the line" Academy Awards nominations (which are fantastic by the way, congrats PJ and Co.!!!) I think he will spend his time with the fans in the VLOGs and keep at his vision. My guess is that we will see a full on trailer attached to "Man of Steel" in the summer. Warner Bros. is relying on MoS to be its huge summer tentpole as well as a movie to kick off a huge reboot of it's DC comic movies... movies that will be made for many years beyond The Hobbit. There is already huge buzz around it. So you know that the first weekend is going to be massive. They want all those eyes to see a great trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And PJ is not going to miss his chance for the wow factor. Seeing as how the edit is nearly finished for Part 2 that means they have almost a full year for any pickups, refining VFX, color grading, sound mixing or in short - FINISHING. You know that they want this second movie to be bigger and better and help to build to that final act but part 2 has to be incredible. People expect it to be. Smaug has to be THE dragon of all dragons. And the darker and more dangerous starts to really kick in. Anyway... sorry for the long winded post. Those are just some thoughts that have been swirling around in my head. Looking forward to whatever we get.

That's...risky. Hope he doesn't lose it, or use it on a computer on any community wifi, like a hotel.

If someone steals it and leaks it... We get to see it a year earlier Even though heaps of the visual effects shots wouldn't be finished, but still!

One of those encrypted ones that automatically deletes the content if you insert a wrong password. Though considering that even state secrets have been transported on completely unprotected drives, who knows...

Who wouldn't want to see DoS right now, even if it wasn't fully completed? I know I would. But there are some who would be fine seeing the almost completed version and passing on the expensive theater version. I think carrying the film around is a bad idea, especially advertising that you do so.

I wouldn't watch it. What's the point? It's unfinished! I'd rather be told some teasers and spoilers from the film, rather than watching the entire unfinished film. Also, it would be an even longer wait until TABA!

There are most definately copies in the studio and probably also on PJ's home computer and anywhere else where editing is done. And usually those drives give you three tries before deleting the content, anyway.

I think he said he had it back in his room on his iPad, actually. And all I could think was thank God the show wasn't live, or there would be someone in that room right then looking for it. BTW, I bet it looks nice on a high res iPad. The number of times I forget my password, and/or type it in wrong. I wouldn't want the only copy of TDOS being deleted! That FOTR had been out for a while when we saw that Two Towers 4 minute trailer of the battle...the audience erupted in cheers and applause when it was over. That said, it's possible that they might add something to the prints that go out if they extend the release to cover Oscar time.

That's why I went to see FOTR one more time before it left the cinema. Any news about a DOS trailer will be posted here on TORN.

I just wanna see a trailer ASAP. But if they were to attach it to Unexpected Journey, bring in a few more $$$, and just further illustrate the disconnect between movie audiences and dumb movie critics... well that would be pretty enjoyable in and of itself.
