The fate/destiny of men (mankind) Can't Post

The LOTR wikia page says this in the article about the Halls of Mandos:

"The elves were doomed to wait in the halls until the end of time, but Men had a different fate, a fate which not even Manw truly understood."

It's made me think, the fate of men which only Eru presumably understands, was this to reflect Tolkien's uncertainty about what happens after death?

What would you see as the fate of man? I assume this fate is what we do in the afterlife rather than during physical life on Earth?

Tolkien had no doubts about the afterlife [In reply to] Can't Post

as a devout Catholic, he believed in Heaven, Hell and purgatory.

I think Tolkien was deliberately vague about the fate of men in his writings so he could avoid imposing an explicitly Christian belief system with respect to an afterlife. He mentions that men go beyond the "circles of the world" but elves are doomed to remain in Middle-earth. Dwarves go the "the halls of their fathers", and we don't really know what happens to hobbits.

Everyone has their personal opinion on what happens after we die, but Tolkien certainly wasn't uncertain.

agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

even though Tolkien's own allusion still brings to mind the images of Christianity for me, and that okay...for me.
