Am I basically a troll? Can't Post

Apparently, I demonstrate this quality by daring to claim (as I honestly believe) that The Two Towers would be a better film for having a lot less of Helm's Deep, and that Dain could credibly appear only at the end of The Hobbit as Fortinbras appears only at the end of Hamlet.

*slinks back under bridge* (it seems I'm not the sun-shunning kind of troll)

I often hold you up as an example [In reply to] Can't Post

(although I don't refer to you by nick, when I do) of how a person can dislike the movies and still have a civilized conversation about them - at least with other civilized people.

Some people (mostly on another board) would like to believe that if they don't like the movie their only recourse is to be insulting (to other people) and obscene about it. That of course is nonsense and you prove it to be just that.

You just keep doing what you do because it's an essential part of the Tolkien fanbase and these boards.

Welcome to trolldom! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been heavily implied multiple times to be one since the release of the new movie. I seem to be careening through uncharted waters right now. Glad to have someone right there with me Wink

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

Some people just don't like my opinion of the film. I've had to bite my tongue and move on quite a few times when they get nasty about it.

What of Act IV, scene IV?
And Dain isn't being talked of right at the beginning. like Fortinbras is.

Anyway - I wish we had more trolls like you around here. In fact, I wish you would troll the RR more often and more extensively. Please?

I haven't read that post, but does labelling someone a troll warrant removal?

As far as I'm concerned - someone might call gramma a troll. Or even Altaira. I would be bemused, but not more than that.

It's an approximate comparison. [In reply to] Can't Post

Still, good point about Fortinbras's brief earlier appearance:

Quote
Go, captain, from me greet the Danish king;
Tell him that, by his licence, Fortinbras
Craves the conveyance of a promised march
Over his kingdom. You know the rendezvous.
If that his majesty would aught with us,
We shall express our duty in his eye;
And let him know so.

It might be worth comparing that passage to this one from Tolkien, roughly in "Act IV" of his book:

Quote
‘We are sent from Dain son of Nain’, they said when questioned. ‘We are hastening to our kinsmen in the Mountain, since we learn that the kingdom of old is renewed. But who are you that sit in the plain as foes before defended walls?’ This, of course, in the polite and rather old-fashioned language of such occasions, meant simply: ‘You have no business here. We are going on, so make way or we shall fight you!’ They meant to push on between the Mountain and the loop of the river; for the narrow land there did not seem to be strongly guarded.

Tolkien's use of formalized language (here and in the earlier announcement by Bard's herald) may remind some readers of Shakespeare. And both excerpts concern permission for troops to pass. I look forward to commentary on whether Erebor is more like Denmark or Poland.

No. [In reply to] Can't Post

A troll would post in one of the several box office threads something like:

"Do all y'all have shares in this thing? Who cares!?!"

I note that you have not done such a thing, therefore you are not a troll (and neither am I, apparently).

... Donry said it best. Nice to see Sador here too!

All I know [In reply to] Can't Post

If that's trolling [In reply to] Can't Post

then I've been trolling these boards a lot harder than you have and going back at least as far.

"I like the kind of literary criticism that tries very hard to understand what the author is saying. I despise the kind that cares only about how the reader responds to it. The first requires a great deal of hard scholarship, ultimately as much as had the writer. The second can be practiced by anyone with a navel into which to gaze."
