Tolkien Great-Grandson dipping into the Pipeweed Can't Post

TORn has long been noted for reporting even the most obscure Tolkien related news (much to the chagrine of many hardcore fans - What? You don't want to know how Orlando's breakfast was this morning?). So we can't necessarily be too discerning when it comes to obscure Tolkien family related news. Ringer Smeagirl sends us a link to UK's The Sun with news about one of Tolkien's great-grandsons who may be taking 'pipeweed' as a way of life! [Read more...] Feel free to voice your opinion on whether we should even report this story via our Message Boards.

What's the fuss? [In reply to] Can't Post

Tolkien's family likes pipeweed? SHOCKER! While I'll admit his choice may not be popular, I have trouble getting upset by this. As I've said before... every family has a pirate aboard ;)

Because I really want to know how it was. Tongue

Seriously, i'm not saying I agree with Piers' liffestyle, but there are many things worse that he could have been doing!

I may not be an Orli girl (he's a little cutie, but I have a son about his age!) still, I find the happenings of our folks (and like it or not they are our folks) interesting and worthy of note. I may not agree with what they are doing, but it's fun to hear. So long as it doesn't become a paparazzi issue. I loathe them.

*snicker* Yep, [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd been debating whether to even submit this, and wondering whether it would get posted, and whether anyone else had submitted it.

It's kind of funny, in any case. What's up with his hair? And isn't Crombleholme the most excellent name?

I have no problem with him putting whatever he wants into his pipe. Though I'm sure his great-grandfather's royalties could be better spent. Silly trustifarian.

Edit: And in other silly non-news, I'm wearing my Frodo-ish pants at work today. They make me very happy. Laugh

a huge laugh! Certainly not my style, but it's interesting the many ways folks find to express themselves.

Anyway, this isn't the "nicotina" stuff that Tolkien was talking about. I remember hearing that a lot of folks didn't want LotR to succeed because it bought back memories of little stores selling scented oils, "roll your own" papers, silver jewelry, candles, and books on "why not just drop out?" In other words, hippies.Cool

It's up to you whether to post stories like this. I briefly glanced at it (long enough to check out his hair!) but didn't read through it.

Apparently having a famous great-grandparent is enough to make an ordinary pot bust into an international news story.

Hey, I may be a Yank but even over hereon this side of the pond, The Sun has got an interesting rep. It puts The Enquireer in the shade. If there hadn't been quotes from an actual judge I would have tossed this one out the window.

Hey, IMO, I agree with the "pirate" thing. And if he wants to go around with the "Harad" look, fine by me! Though to me it translates "hardcore industrial rock." My first reaction though was: "Je looks a bit like Liam Neeson."

Frodo pants? [In reply to] Can't Post

But probably no one commented on them at work, huh?...oh, well, at least we know the Hobbits liked comfy styles!

Yeah, I'm more interested in "Crombleholme" (a philologist would have fun with that name!) and the dreds - which are not unusual over there. My eldest has had hers in dreds for a couple of years now - it's her way of taming her naturally frizzy curls - and the only times she's gotten strange looks, have been when she's come back to the U.S. for visits.

Don't you think he has his great-grandpa's nose...?

The Saddest News Reporting I've Ever Seen at Our Beloved TORn! [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
TORn has long been noted for reporting even the most obscure Tolkien related news (much to the chagrine of many hardcore fans - What? You don't want to know how Orlando's breakfast was this morning?). So we can't necessarily be too discerning when it comes to obscure Tolkien family related news. [Read more...] Feel free to voice your opinion on whether we should even report this story via our Message Boards.

This is my first ever posting on the message boards, and I am a long time visitor of the website. I am just so disappointed to see this article that I had to express my opinion. I challenge the message board admins and other TORn staff to keep this post up as it is the sincere expression of a longtime TORn and Tolkien fan.
This is indeed a new low for TORn. This site is supposed to be about fans of JRR Tolkien. How in the world does a story like this even honor his memory or legacy? Surely Calisuri himself felt a twinge of guilt or knew somewhere in his brain that posting this article was wrong, or was it just a cheap attempt to create a buzz on the message boards? Never has such a scandal or slanderous article been posted on this website since its start in 1999. If someone can disprove me on this, go for it! I’d love to see the proof. With all due respect, why Calisuri is all of the sudden empowered to do so is hard to fathom. Clearly a cowboy maneuver – what were you thinking?? Who cares about this guy’s bad habits – this article is not good for TORn, it’s not good for Tolkien, and it’s not good for anything related to all that we care about and hold dear. What kind of impression does this leave on our youngest site readers, and the next generation of TORn fans? And have you never puffed on the pipeweed Calisuri?? If you live in a glass house….
Obviously news is slow but we love TORn and we would never abandon it. I thought that the PTB and other reporters were following some kind of moral code which honored the privacy of celebrities and others (like Tolkien family members), which this clearly violates. Calisuri should be censured for posting this article, which should be taken down. I’m disappointed in my fellow Ringers for not calling him out on this too – where has the voice of dissention at this website gone? Are we just a bunch of tools here or do people actually think for themselves at this website? Just because we love TORn, the PTB and Tolkien doesn’t mean we can’t express a negative opinion about things our community does.
I love the comment about missing Christopher Tolkien’s birthday. And what about the anniversary of Tolkien’s death? That was missed too. It would be nice to see TORn get back to its roots about fandom – the art, the stories, the fan-inspired news and happenings – instead of printing drivel like this. That’s where the news is at Calisuri – not in the Sun, for goodness’ sakes. Is TORn really a website about Tolkien fans or just another Hollywood-esque commercial?
Longtime Tolkien fans should know that JRR Tolkien shunned the media and relished his personal privacy. It would be good for TORn to respect this and honor his descendants instead of reprinting a story like this from the Sun. I hope the website is more careful in the future and respectful of the Tolkien legacy instead of grabbing cheap headlines about sensational scandals that are truly nobody else’s business just to create some kind of buzz.

on the pants. Then again I haven't had the courage to wear them with the Frodo shirt (though I've worn that with other pants), and I haven't found a really Frodo-ish vest yet. Though I did find the cutest little brown dress where the top part looks similar, so maybe if I wear that with the Frodo shirt?

No idea if any of my co-workers would notice and/or say anything even if I came in wearing a full Frodo or elf outfit, but it does amuse me. ;-)

I think dreads can look very cool, but Mr. Crombleholm's (I love saying that!) didn't impress me much. The face does look familiar though! But as others have mentioned, he looks old for 27. I hope his lifestyle isn't damaging his health.

The only real thing that unsettles me [In reply to] Can't Post

is the fact that he is entrusted with money from Tolkien's estate. I do not know to what regard he holds his great grandfather, but if it were i, i would consider it a sacred trust to be wisely used, if at all.
I can see why Smealgirl would be reserved concerning posting this. It certainly seems, as the usual Tolkien related subject , to be a bit seedy or unattractive and as i said before a little unsettling, but it is a curiosity.
But it is Tolkien related and for that reason should not be held back. Because it is from the sun (personally i would never buy this cr*p- waste of a good tree), it must be held in part at least, in suspect.
That's my 2cents.
Do not like hair like that ,sorry. It looks like a remnent revealed by low tideUnimpressed.

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

I can't tell if you're actually that angry, or being a troll! [In reply to] Can't Post

If you're trolling, nice work, you got me to reply. ;-)

If not, eh, lighten up. Calisuri made clear both here and on the homepage that it's debatable whether this belongs here, but he trusts TORnsibs to be intelligent enough to decide on our own whether it's worth reading and discussing.

Probably most people are aware that the Sun isn't the most reputable paper, but this article seems pretty straightforward. Are you aware of anything in the article that's factually incorrect? If so, feel free to post conflicting info., otherwise your characterization of the article as "slanderous" is incorrect. (And technically you mean "libel" anyway, but whatever . . .) If something is truthful, it isn't defamation of any kind.

And there's no point in talking about protecting people's privacy, as once there's been a criminal case, the judge's ruling is public record.

What Calisuri may or may not smoke is totally irrelevant!

Personally I don't care what anyone else smokes or doesn't, but if someone gets caught breaking the law, it becomes news, and if it's a Tolkien descendant then it's arguably TORn news. Mostly I enjoyed learning that his name is Crombleholme. I think JRR would have really liked that name.

Welcome to the message boards BTW. De-lurk any time.
