I'm sure it's beyond $700 million worldwide by now. [In reply to] Can't Post

The international numbers for Monday and Tuesday are not in yet - so with those days, the movie has surely crossed the $700 million mark by now.

This 4th weekend is going to be a huge factor in determining whether or not The Hobbit: AUJ will make it to 1 billion dollars worldwide.

Did the film already opened in China? [In reply to] Can't Post

If not there might be a few more dollars coming. Here are some numbers from this year from the Chinese market to compare:

The Avengers - $84,100,000

The Dark Knight Rises -
$52,785,334

The Amazing Spider-Man -
$48,818,164

Men In Black 3 -
$77,246,700

It is not in China yet. [In reply to] Can't Post

I think China could be the deciding factor in this. If it does well in China, it should have little problem getting to 1 billion worldwide.

Hopefully there's no Chinese film coming out when the Hobbit releases [In reply to] Can't Post

like in Japan where the release of this One Piece film destroyed the box office numbers of AUJ.

It opens in China on January 10th. [In reply to] Can't Post

You can see an article about it here.

That site speculates that there won't be much local competition - because they planned it that way. And they expect The Hobbit: AUJ to get past $50 million in China.

I like the sound of that. I can actually see it doing better than that though.

Don't think one should blame it on One Piece [In reply to] Can't Post

Even without that movie, Hobbit would not have suddenly become a hit there. It probably hurt it somewhat but even with an increase of 50% Hobbit would have struggled to hit $30m there. Japanese just didn't give a poop, for whatever reason. LOTR? That was another movie, another time...

I have wondered how these films appeal...both LOTR and The Hobbit in [In reply to] Can't Post

countries like China, India, etc. due to cultural differences. However, one thing that may help The Hobbit is the common mythic Dragon as a central feature, especially in DOS next year. That story line may appeal very well in China where dragons hold such a huge cultural symbolism...though of a different nature....where it is more benevolant .

"In Chinese culture today, the dragon is mostly used for decorative purposes. It is a taboo to disfigure a depiction of a dragon."

The article I linked to was posted yesterday - so I assumed they had the most recent info. I guess we will find out for sure in a few days.

Now let's hope it doesn't drop too much in the following weeks and $300m should be doable.

my guess [In reply to] Can't Post

Is it will stand around 265-270 million US by the end of the weekend. It will probably enjoy wide release for the rest of January declining in February and probably wrapping up around the first week of March. I am guessing it will end up around 325-340 million for the US.

I don't get Japan's numbers at all. [In reply to] Can't Post

I could undertand if it took really big drops after it released, but it opened so poorly compared to the LOTR films. I have a friend who lives in Japan and am waiting to hear from him to see if he has any ideas why the film has not performed better there.

I don't understand the numbers from Japan at all, it is almost like the whole country is boycotting that film for some reason. Are any other countries known to have reacted like this?

It should add between $7 and $10 million Wednesday and Thursday. That will bring the total to somewhere between $245 and $248 million. I'm guessing it will gross around $15 to $18 million this weekend, landing it in the range of $260 and $266 million.

i dont get this obsession with box office figures, alot of the best films are commercial flops.
