One for the dictionary - "//" Can't Post

I've noticed a number of posts have "//" as part of the subject line, & I haven't be enable to work out what it means....

Great forum guys, I've not seen better either in quality of discussion or in friendliness.

Hey there :) [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad you like the forums, and we're glad to have you on here too Smile

In response to your question, the "//" and its variants are like "no text" tags, used as a courtesy to indicate that a post has only a subject line and no other content.

It is really helpful to folks viewing the boards in threaded mode, as it tells them that they needn't bother clicking the subject line to expand the post.

Symbols [In reply to] Can't Post

What symbol should be used to say, "I view in flat mode and think anyone who mistakes the subject heading as the message body is a cretin?"

I hold a similar contempt for people who use their email this way and don't bother with a considerate greeting, body, and signature, appropriately formatted, spell-checked, capitalized, checked for grammar, and entirely without numeric spellings.

Maybe it's just me.

That would be a violation of our Terms of Service [In reply to] Can't Post

As you know, we don't allow personal attacks, and calling anyone a cretin qualifies as a personal attack.Cool

Dear Mr JWPlatt. I am writing to you to find out whether this kind of subject line is suitable or not. Please respond with your thoughts and comments. Kind regards, DanielLB. [In reply to] Can't Post

What if all subject lines are like that ^?

Heh. Or like mine. Like a fly to flypaper. I think we've been down this predictable road before, Daniel.

What if we make up our own library of symbols with which to prefix our headings and never tell anyone what they mean? We feel privately vented and no one is the wiser. At least until the more intelligent among us start picking up the contextual clues like a puzzle on a forum-wide scale....

well, since you have deigned to call me a cretin [In reply to] Can't Post

can I add that I giggle with glee everytime I put something in my subject just knowing it ticks you off?

Will add an obligatory smiley face if it helps.

You May [In reply to] Can't Post

It's right up the alley with my sense of humor.

I've learned that obligatory smiley faces always make everything okay. Though I'll wink if it's more of a joke than a tease. Razzes (Tongue) are for when I'm teasing. That said, dry humor and sarcasm spoken here. For that, there must be no use of smiley faces, or it defeats the purpose.

It looks like a mustache. [In reply to] Can't Post

In fact, like the kind of mustache a villain would twirl an end of around his finger.

So my interpretation is "alternate smiley meaning sinister".
