Yeah, I am sure I am breaking some rule on here, feel free to move this thread if it offends ye... I watched the hobbit in 3d, 48fps in the Sun Theatre, yarraville, victoria, australia... Now some background. I am 50, turned the big 5-0 on the 22nd of this month... grew up on tolkien, read the hobbit at age 11, the lotr at age 13... since then have re-read both volumes at least 10 times each...conservatively. I read countless reviews/opinions on here, post and pre- launch... And watched the movie on th 28th of December, wearing my 3d glasses, and sans popcorn or drinks, with some trepidation. And here is my take. The movie is pure, unadulterated, entertainment. The effects; awesome, bed-wettingly so. The plot - well, we all know it don't we? But wait! Some new twists! Bringing it into the storyline of the LOTR...oh joy :-) So, let's break it down... 3D? Best in class... as soon as we saw the Warner and MGM logos in 3D we knew this was going to be special... we just didn't realise how special.... 48 FPS... no comment, except to say it was the most visually breathtaking movie I have EVER seen... was that because of the 48FPS? I have no idea.... The add on plots... they felt like a fan boy had been unleashed on Tolkein's work... oh joy x all in all... 10 out of 10. I want to see it again. And again, and again.... This, my friends, is a work of genius. Do we really have to wait a year for act 2??!!? :-( please tell me if you agree, or think I am deluded. TBGB x

Opinions are varied, from your experience down the gambit but I think there are a fair percentage that shared the same experience. I feel lucky that I am one of them.

seriously... They must surely know PJ is the biggest fan of Tolkien in and out of Middle Earth... they were bound to rip his vision asunder. I went into this movie with 2 thoughts... it has been directed by a fan, and it is a FANTASY. Guess what? It's the most enjoyment I have had since the Return of the King. Don't listen to critics :-)

i agree its a great film. the critics are wrong on so many levels, but one i sympathise.. ...we all know radagast was a minor player in the stories. but suddenly he's out hanging with gandalf the dwarves and fighting orcs on a bunny sled! i can see why people would slate his vision for the above choices. its just not the hobbit. but i can deal with it lol

with all of it. and I'm older than you. No popcorn (makes such a noise). I too think 48 fps is awesome (hear PJ). I think I had it easier than most, 'cos the Hobbit was never my bedtime story, only read it twice and had not much expectations or worries about the story not being exactly like in the book (why should it be? It's a film). Thanks!

I feel exactly the same way! Saw it again for my second viewing and was still as impressed as before...even more so because I noticed some more and realized it was the dwarves (not just the 13, but everything about them: their culture, history, armor, etc. that has made me a Tolkien fan and fan of these films! And because The Hobbit films will center around them more than LOTR this is why this and the next two will probably wind up being my favorite films of all time!

... except about the 48fps which I still haven't seen, but want to. Have to say, though, in good old-fashioned 2D it's amazing. You're not deluded - just willing to let go and enjoy!

it gets an automatic 10, as all the LotR films do, on my list of all-time favorites. Relative to the other LotR films though, right now i'm giving it a 7.5. That's with both FotR and TTT a 10, and RotK a 9. Parts of AUJ were right up there with the other films-- Bag End and the dwarves, Rivendell/The White Council, Riddles in the Dark, visual effects, cinematography and design, all the acting (especially Freeman, Serkis and McKellen)-- all great. Other things, however, did not measure up-- Goblin Town, Azog and his story, the Dol Guldur backstory confusion, action sequences run amok, the silly attempts at humor, and the underwhelming score (which was the biggest surprise to me-- who woulda thought?). Of course all the films have issues, bits of silliness or questionable choices. They're obviously not perfect. But the flaws are easily overlooked with all the other greatness going on onscreen. With AUJ, all those little bits just really started to pile up by the end. Keep in mind, i still like it a lot, and i can't wait to see it again and again, then get the blu-ray, then see it again and again, then get the EE... you get the idea. It's just not quite up there with the other films in the series, is all. But the Extended Edition could easily bump it up a notch or two-- that happened for me with The Two Towers.

"Pure, unadulterated entertainment." "The add on plots... they felt like a fan boy had been unleashed on Tolkein's work." Exactly how I felt, and why I loved it so much!

I was and still am, we have a small group of people who still post over at kongisking.net every day, stop in and say hi The only problem I have with the Hobbit is that I have to wait a year for movie # 2, I saw it twice in 3D HFR & think all movies should be made that way, it's pure movie magic in MHO

I didn't mind Azog, or the Bunny sled but Goblin Town/Goblin King was too cartoony. And about the score. I was disappointed when I first listened to it. Where are all the great themes? The Misty Mountain theme was the only one that was great, unlike FOTR score. I did enjoy the movie especially Bag End and the White Council/Rivendell. As someone said I would be proud to have this sitting next to my LOTR EEs.
