Very sad news: LOTR Oscar-winner Mike Hopkins has drowned Can't Post

Mike Hopkins, who won an Oscar for sound editing on LOTR: The Two Towers, drowned while rafting on the Waiohine River river: http://www.stuff.co.nz/...-sound-editor-drowns

I remember him from the TT DVD appendices.

RIP Mike.

Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I remember him [In reply to] Can't Post

He provided the voice of Farmer Maggot in the cornfield scene.

This is sad news.

So very sad. [In reply to] Can't Post

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends, and all those who knew him.

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
"Most astonishing wonderful!"

Condolences [In reply to] Can't Post

My heart-felt condolences to his family and to the entire Tolkien community/family as well.

'There is some woe that lies upon you... Why will you not tell me more?'
'For that woe is past,' said Galadriel; 'and I would take what joy is here left, untroubled by memory. And maybe there is woe enough yet to come, thought still hope may seem bright.'

What a sad loss, [In reply to] Can't Post

both for his family and friends, and for the film making community.

Sometimes I find this time of year so sad - the drowning statistics are just terrible. Frown

Oh how awful! [In reply to] Can't Post

My thoughts go out to his family and friends. What a tragedy. It's always especially hard when they go before their time.

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall and the bells in the steeple, too.
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird is popping out to say coo-coo (coo-coo, coo-coo).

TV3 news says Mike was recently married [In reply to] Can't Post

and his wife was in the area with him at the time of the accident. The station didn't say if she was on land or one of the two women who were also on the raft, and were rescued.

So sad [In reply to] Can't Post

Can't do better than quote the comment on the home page:

Quote
We wish him godspeed on his new journey, certain that he can make the thunder of Heaven sound that much sweeter to the ears of the Divine.
Rest in peace, Mike Hopkins.

It is a tragic happening. [In reply to] Can't Post

His loss will be felt from being a fellow grand spirit and skilled artisan.
It looks like he loved to live big and had a zest for life.
Sail on Mike.

No! Oh no.... [In reply to] Can't Post

This is horrible! Tragic!

He was such a wonderful collaborator on The Lord of the Rings films... and boasted of having his voice in each film.

I'm so sorry...

All my thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, and his filmic family in Miramar.

Terrible news--what a blow [In reply to] Can't Post

and a shock.

I can't imagine what his family is going through.

I forget, sometimes, how dangerous nature can be--just a freak accident, it sounds like.

And I'm sure Mr. Jackson will never be the same, having worked with him so long.

And amen to the quote Dormouse posted above
( . . . certain that he can make the thunder of Heaven sound that much sweeter to the ears of the Divine.
Rest in peace, Mike Hopkins).
