It's actually even more hilarious if you can understand Russian, because Gandalf speaks with the tone and mannerisms of a stereotypical villain from a swashbuckling historical drama (basically the way you'd expect Cardinal Richeleau from the "Three Musketeers" to be portrayed). It's all so weird it borders on the absurd and postmodern. : - D

As Curious has observed many times, Gandalf is much more of a Trickster character in the earlier book than he is in The Lord of the Rings.

Following the 1966 ten-minute short film, the 1977 American TV version, and this one, which I'd never heard of. I don't know Russian, so I don't know if I'll watch this one through! So far, the Bilbo reminds me a little of Zero Mostel. (But does he get more of Bilbo's "fatuous boob" quality --to use squire's term-- than Martin Freeman managed?) And the director seems not to know there are such things as two-shots and shot/reverse shots.

Actually, there's a "subtitled" version on Youtube. It's too funny(though, granted, it's too heavy on the language)! It's like watching some really awful amateur stage show, and the made up subtitles make it even funnier! "I'm wearing a pink shirt". All I can say is that this has to be some kind of satire, because it's just way too camp to not be! On second thought, I take that back. it's funny for a VERY short time. I'd rather have the actual translations, but doesn't look that'll happen. The song the Dwarves sing is very Russian, but very lively and upbeat. ^_^

I'll have to find it! This Russian version was awful! It looked like an amateur production where everyone brought their own costumes. And Gandalf looks FABULOUS! *jazz hands*. And for no reason whatsoever....dance numbers for the goblins as well as the men. I just wished there was a subtitled version.

http://newboards.theonering.net/...latest_reply;so=ASC; It's a fascinating look at how a book can be "modified" to suit the medium. And on re-reading Darkstone's original post in your link to squire's post in that thread, I am more convinced than ever how prescient that guy is - spooky!

Gosh, I'm dumb! I could join in a convo about Russian editions of The Hobbit - that is, the book. ( the geordie library has on its shelves a copy of an edition of TH and LotR together in a slip-case, with illustrations by Denis Gordeyev. Not to mention an original picture on one of its vast marbled walls.) But I cannot bring myself to discuss the relevant merits of movie adaptations from Hollywood, the Antipodes and the Urals; dear me, no. That would be like asking me which of three nasty viruses I'd prefer to be injected with - no, no - I can't do that.

From the article: The point is, in 1985, the Soviets beat the Americans in the race to reboot Tolkien for the small screen. Imagine the surprise at Rankin/Bass, which produced their animated movie-for-television adaptation of The Hobbit in 1977!
