A NZ paper mentioned being on location when Andy Serkis directed 100 dwarf extras who were walking down a mountain. Prosthetics supervisor Tami Lane also mentioned having a cameo. I think this is the only shot left of that scene in the movie: http://i.imgur.com/8Zspoh.jpg

Maybe one of the extras from the prologue they showed again as a refugee? The background reminds me of the wandering dwarves scene.

I thought he would make a more substantial appearance than an extra... but I guess you're both right about the refugees (even his clothing seems to suggest so)

... walk right up to the top of a mountain anyway? You'd just walk around it or, in a Dwarf's case, under it. Thorin: "Let's just go up this mountain so that I can get another heroic hero shot." Refugee dwarves: "Another one?! *grumble* "

You make for a pass in the mountains - means you dont have to walk as far - this is done all around the world because its quicker and easier.
