SCOD - Agitated Gollum Can't Post

Hi all! Hope everyone's getting into the holiday spirit, and enjoying The Hobbit, but for now why don't we kick back with some more TTT?

I couldn't really come up with a good title for this SCOD, but I chose this one in particular because of the ensemble and Gollum's moment of sheer distaste.

1.) Giving characters business in a scene is always good. What's everybody up to here (most notably Frodo). Does all the motion and activity make this scene flow better? What about the shot itself as a screencap?

2.) Any thoughts on Gollum? Sam?

3.) Any other thoughts or comments?

This is probably the bit of the trilogy I quote the most... [In reply to] Can't Post

"Boil 'em, mash 'em, stickeminnastew" Laugh

It's good that Frodo's doing something - it wouldn't do to have him moping about! Wink

Heartbreaking Scene [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't really have specific answers to your question, but I do want to say that this is one of my favorite parts of the movie and I find it a hearbreaking scene. It's genuinely funny and it seems that Sam and Gollum are basically interacting like siblings. Frodo, Sam, and Gollum seem to be a family here, and this is the last time they will all interact on essentially good terms. It's a taste of what might have been. So, even though it's very light-hearted and humorous, I find it incredibly sad in context of what is to come.

Thinking about it now, I am reminded of the ice-skating scene in King Kong. It is the one last time Ann Darrow and Kong can have fun together and interact in their common physical language. You know what's coming and that makes the happy scene all the more sad.

all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us...

Agitated Gollum [In reply to] Can't Post

I love this scene, mostly because you get the shortest glimpse of Gollum and Sam with a chance at getting along decently, albeit they are still arguing.

Sam is being Sam - taking care of Frodo, making sure he gets a decent meal.

Looks like Frodo is writing, keeping a journal maybe? Trying to decipher runes on the rock? Hard to tell.

Gollum is a most pitiful creature. I really wanted to like him in all the movies, and PJ did a great job of keeping the good Smeagol/bad Gollum ambiguity alive until close to the end of the trilogy. The fact that he didn't know what po-ta-toes were, or the fact that he likes things raw and wriggling rather than nicely cooked made me feel awfully sorry for him...made me want to cook him a good supper.

It's such a quotable scene [In reply to] Can't Post

Along with the "Boil 'em, mash 'em" quote, I often find myself saying, "They are young, they are tender...eat them...eat them" to the dog! And of course, Po-tae-toes...

This was one of my favorite scenes too [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm especially curious as to what Frodo is doing. Is he writing? It was just amusing watching Sam and Gollum bicker about the food.

"Noooo! Stupid, fat hobbit! He ruins it!"

"What's taters, precious? What's taters, eh?"
"Po-tay-toes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stickeminastew!"

But it was also a sad scene because this would be the last time Gollum and Sam would 'get along', if you could call it that.

Gollum in a Stew [In reply to] Can't Post

Running on empty I would say. The centre piece in this scene would have to be Gollum and Sam.

With the way Gollum is positioned he looks like he is about to pounce onto Sam for the unexpected cooking lessons. Sam was not about to go fast food.

Memorable scene for its humour and it almost made me believe that Sam and Gollum could eventually become friends.

If I remember, Frodo also managed to add his voice to the discussion going on around the campfire.
