Hobbit review, at last! [In reply to] Can't Post

After a long wait and all kind fo expectations I finally got to see this film on Saturday the December 15th. I was suprised of the result. Of course, it is far from perfect and to appreciate this adaptation one has to accept that it is a lot different than his wonderful little book called: The Hobbit. The story has been given a more 'epic' breath almost in the tone of LOTR. I think the way they explain the context on which the story take place is quite good. Right at the beggining of the film, we've got a a full account of what happened in the Kingdom of Erebor and the viewer unfamiliar with these matter will acquired a fair understanding. I would not say that this was 'absolutely' necessery but at any rate it seemed important for Peter Jackson and his screewritters that the ''background'' (mostly things that can be learned in the appendices of LOTR) get to be available for the casual viewer that had not read the books. So when the compagny arrive in Rivendell, the vewiers are explained why Gandalf might has organized this expediation to take place and what Bilbo Baggins The Halfling (As Galadriel said in Imladris), has to do with it. I've like the riddle game moment, it has been handled quite well. the only thing is that at times Gollum's play is a bit too funny almost derisive for the context but it is good nonetheless. There are some things I was not fond of at all. The concept of the survival of Azog who is now some sort of villain in the story of the film, which pursuie the compagny and which they escape from is very distasteful as a Tolkien's works fan. It is complety out context. Also, it seemed so in the trailer but now it is confirmed: I dislike what they've done with Radagast The Brown. He is in the film sort of a nutter on the brink of crazines with birds in his hair and bugs in his mouth... It looks a bit as a 'charicature'of the book character. Not really the image of The Radagast I know from the passage of FOTR. Also, onne might wonder what has he got to do in this tale at all? This is indeed one of many storical invention of Peter Jackson for this film. Well, I will not give a personal account of each passage of the movie, it will take hours and will probably be of not much interest to people reading the critics available. But to be fair, it is a film that will hold you the 2h40 in front of the screen. The film has an interesting pace but the numerous addition of scenes, dialogues ect not from the book, can make the whole seems artificial... It is nonetheless a must-see for all fans of LOTR, The Hobbit, fantasy or cinema in general.

My Thoughts (Reposted).... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Good
1. Good morning scene
2. The Shire
3. The Dwarf songs!
4. Erebor and Dale
5. Radagast - more depth and power than meets the eye
5a. Sebastian the hedgehog, the thrush and the Rhosgobel rabbits
6. Bilbo's departure dialogue with Bofur
7. The Great Goblin - a villain with flair and personality!
8. Gandalf's power display in Goblin-Town
9. Thorin - his intensity provides immediate weight to scenes
10. Riddles in the Dark - especially Bilbo's escape
11. The Eagles - majestic breath of fresh air
12. The Dragon's Eye! - I can't wait for Part 2!
13. Us of Orcish by Orcs (no silly "How come we can't have some meats?" lines)

Dislikes
1. Long stone giants scene (should have been much shorter)
2. First orc/warg chase scene and using Radagast as diversion
3. The mangy Warg design (still would prefer a giant wolf look)
4. Backstory as prologue (would have preferred it later in the story)
5. Condensing the events surrounding Thror and Thrain to one battle, and not having Azog killed by Dain.
6. The long drawn out fight and escape scene in Goblin-Town (would have preferred more time devoted to interaction between Goblin King and Thorin and Gandalf
7. The Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fire scene - especially having Azog there and then having Thorin climbing from the tree to battle Azog :-(. The book version would have been far better.
8. Not showing Ori sketching in his book, or Bifur making toys, or more of the dwarves interacting with Bilbo.
9. Bottom line - trim the stone giants scene, delete the first warg chase scene, simplify the Goblin-Town escape sequence, modify the Frying Pan scene and use that spare time to add more character interaction.

48 fps vs 24 fps
1. Parts better in 48fps:
- Erebor and Dale (the detail of the dwarf halls was not done justice at 24 fps);
- the Rivendell scenes (the soft focus of the background was the right touch)
- the Wargs actually looked much more sinister in HFR
- Riddles in the Dark

2. Parts better in 24fps:
- the unexpected party scenes (I think the soft focus technique used in the Rivendell scenes for the background would have helped in the interior Bag End scenes.
- gory scenes such as the battles and the dead animals at Rhosgobel (in HFR the dead animals looked too creepily realistic).

3. Overall Impression - I believe the 48 fps is the superior format because it will give the director more control during post production than the 24 fps. 24 fps has its limitations and less ways of overcoming them. Hopefully, for Parts 2 and 3, the production team will be able to accentuate the positive aspects of the HFR and mitigate the negative aspects.

Just Viewed film......all I can say..AWESOME! (re-posted for YaznegSouth40 [In reply to] Can't Post

just like I figured it would be! No complaints! I absolutely loved this film like I knew I would! It was even better than I expected to tell the truth! Yes Peter Jackson and crew made some wholesale changes from the book and even deviations from the appendices...but even despite that...what a vision of EPICNESS!

Parts I liked the most: ( no particular order)

1.The Epilogue was PERFECT! Erebor was unbelievable!
2.Riddles in the Dark---what can I say...Gollum was as good as ever (shame he won't factor in the next two films),he was more humorous than ever.
3.Scenery---breathtaking all around---Misty Mountains at day and night, (Imladris)Rivendell in it's glory.
4.Stone Giants fight---so realistically awesome!
5.The White Council
6.Azog and his white warg--devastatingly cool!
7.the flashback battle of Azanbiluzar --note the huge orc breeds there(similar to Azog).Did see Bolg in that battle sequence. The dwarves...epic!

Will be viewing at least once more if not two more times.

Same Night Movie Review [In reply to] Can't Post

Is one I like. They have a different way of marking... drink till its good... the more shots the worse it is. The Hobbit gets a one... which is good :)

Carrock Scene (Spoiler)... [In reply to] Can't Post

It seemed Thorin's embrace of Bilbo at the Carrock was added after it was decided to split the film into three parts so as to end Part 1 with a marker in the development of the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo. Had the film not ended at that point, showing Thorin letting down his guard would not have been needed at all.

As cheesy as some consider this scene, what it does help to do, is make Bilbo's later betrayal with the Arkenstone that much more painful for Thorin.

Some thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's a list of all the things I loved about the film.

1. The exiled dwarves in the wilderness - when there's like a billion of them. Great shot!
2. Good Morning - perfect. Straight from the book and exceedingly well acted.
3. The Unexpected Party - phenomenal. I'll be getting the DVD just for these scenes alone. I especially loved the two dwarf songs.
4. Bilbo running through the Shire - the way he ran was hilarious and almost exactly how I'd imagine Bilbo to run.
5. Handkerchief - Bofur giving Bilbo that dirty cloth. Perfect!
6. Balin's narration of Azanulbizar - not the flashback itself, just Balin's lines (and Ken Stott's delivery).
6.5 - Azanulbizar - I liked some of it, but not all of it. Thorin's shield. The beheading of Thror was horrifying, but I wish they'd written Azog on him.
7. Radagast running & bunny sled & Dol Guldor - I liked most of it, but not all.
8. Entrance to Rivendell.
9. Galadriel - Cate was perfect as usual. Her telepathic dialogue with Gandalf was good. I liked their banter Smile
10. Bilbo & Bofur conversation - James Nesbitt is awesome in the vlogs and I liked seeing him in a character scene.
11. Gandalf's return - perfect lightning flash.
12. The Pity of Bilbo - visually, it was quite interesting.

ETA - The design of Carrock was amazing!

I would have liked that scene [In reply to] Can't Post

If Thorin had started by being appreciative toward Bilbo for saving him! Instead, he starts berating him and yelling at him instead of being thankful. Somehow it still ended in a hug Crazy

If Thorin had been crazy appreciative in the first place and then hugged Bilbo, I would have loved it.

I took it as Thorin is yelling at Bilbo the way you would yell at someone for whom you cared deeply after they just did something reckless or endangering. [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

That's how it's supposed to be taken. But I've seen that in films wayyyy too many times and it just felt cliched and forced to me.

Yeah, me too. Hopefully some good will come of it, if Film 3 delivers on Thorin's later feeling of betrayal. [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw it the second time today [In reply to] Can't Post

and I just loved it. The whole of it :)

The only scene that I still have problems with is the attack of the wargs during the day ( when they chase Radagast)

To me it just fell flat. The scene suggest that the dwarves were in danger but I didn't felt it. I don't know if it was the score or the way it was edited but I just looked at that scene and I didn't felt any danger or suspense in it. And then the attack of the elves is so short and quick and I didn't understood much from it.

But the rest of the movie was fantastic.
This time around I liked the intro with old Bilbo and Frodo, I didn't found the battle from Moria or the trolls scene to be rushed , I didn't mind the stone giants fight and I liked the goblin town scene.

So after the second viewing the movie gets a solid 9/10 from me and I can't wait to see it the third time :D

Today I've saw it in 2D 24fps but I liked it more in 3D 48fps.
The 2D was too blurry in some scenes I don't know if it was the movie or the cinema had problems with the projector.

The 48fps was crystal clear and I loved it.
So next time it will be probably again 48fps for me.

There is always hope
