Thranduil [In reply to] Can't Post

I am excited to see Thanduil. Thingol and the grey elves of Doriath were some of my favoriteTolkien characters and Thranduil being a grey elf and felling different seems right.

Thranduil just had about 10 seconds of screentime [In reply to] Can't Post

...yet somehow he is unforgettable, at least to me. Loved the design and his mount, everything about it. Thranduil was greedy and hostile in the book and I'm glad they're following the spirit of the book. Thranduil is NOT as kind and welcoming as Elrond and Galadriel, remember that.

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

A deer mount is pretty neat [In reply to] Can't Post

But a pegasi probably would have been cooler.

Are you serious? [In reply to] Can't Post

A pegasi would have been TERRIBLE.

Tolkien drew on some Greek themes in some of the early stories (Turin, et. al.). I think it would have been a nice tie-in.

Plus, pegasi just look so much cooler than deer.

Would be totally out of place... [In reply to] Can't Post

...in a 'realistic' fantasy world such as Middle Earth. And I do no think pegasi look cooler than deer. Not at all. Especially not if it was a Megaloceros.

I suppose there is that [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe a camel, then?

Camels look pretty cool too, and the Woodland Elves could probably have traded for them with friendly caravan merchants from Far Harad.

No... [In reply to] Can't Post

And for several reasons.

First of all, we are 'used' to seeing people riding camels, in contradiction to someone riding a deer, so you would not get the 'otherworldy' effect you have with the deer.
Second, I don't think camels are really beautiful animals. They are nice and such, but are a bit 'silly' too. A male deer has a some sort of epicness to him.
Third, a male deer is often called the 'King of the Forest', so it matches perfectly with Thranduil.
Fourth, if it truly is a Megaloceros that is even better. A realistic animal, that really did exist, but is surrounded by legend. Perhaps it was even in the original Ring of the Nibelungs (as the Scelch).

About the CGI [In reply to] Can't Post

For you guys complaining about the bad CG elk, did you go watch the film in 48 or 24 fps?

Even if it's not the same animal... [In reply to] Can't Post

We know that movie-Thranduil loves deers and elks...so it would work anyway.

Great thinking !

Saw it in HFR 3D [In reply to] Can't Post

and the elk looked fine, really. If anything, the 48 fps gave weight to the CG characters and creatures and made them even more real (IMO, but we all have different perceptions)
