The physics of Gollum Can't Post

Ran across this piece on Wired that analyzes how many fish Gollum must eat per day to survive underground. Caution: there is a very minor not-quite-family friendly word or two in there. Bigger caution: contains math.

Also linked from there is another article about how Gollum can see in the dark. This article isn't as informative, but it did remind me of a Tolkien Reading Day post made by yours truly a long time ago. And linking to THAT post provides a great opportunity for some folks to see one of the all-time great collaborative posts in my memory of this forum (not referring to my subpost - but the entire thread was way cool).

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville
