Gollum [In reply to] Can't Post

Bilbo and the goblin are fighting each other and they both fall into Gollum's cave (instead of Dori carrying Bilbo and dropping him when chased by goblins). The goblin has an unfortunate fall and Gollum finishes him. While doing so, he drops the ring and Bilbo picks it up.

Sorry if you misunderstood me below.

Macfalk's thread would have done nicely. I'll lock his now, but fom now on please check the board for threads where spoilers are already being discussed and don't start a new one if one already exists. mcfaulk, thanks for being such a good sport! Smile

Tired of staff yet? [In reply to] Can't Post

In the locked thread there is a question about "Benny Hill" movement due to 48 fps.

I find the whole idea of that question absolutely absurd. In short NO.

Lots of people will not like 48 fps but the movement is NOT off or faster or at least I sure didn't notice and I was looking very hard at 48. I find the notion completely odd.

And if you are tired of staff, too bad, I was a message board poster first and will remain one. Tongue

Gravity played a big part [In reply to] Can't Post

The scene does illustrate the brutality of Gollum nicely and serves notice to us for the rest of the scene: This guy is a killer.

...and was anyone distracted by the jump from Thorin's fake beard and Armitage's subsequent real beard?

Not really. [In reply to] Can't Post

At least not if my memory serves me well. Maybe they figured it would mess upp the consistency between TH and LOTR by altering Glamdring.

No to both [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't see Glamdring glow.

Thorin cuts back his beard after they lose Erebor and he becomes a wandering smith, so it comes off as a deliberate decision, almost like he cut his beard in shame. This is not explicitly stated, but thats how I took it.

Hi! [In reply to] Can't Post

Where is he supposed to be working when you see him as a "wandering smith"? The Blue Mountains? Dale? Somewhere else?

Thanks

We don't get much information about this part. But it is very much in the spirit of the books and appendices.

It's after the attack of Smaug. Dale has been destroyed and the dwarves did a little exodus. So i reckon its at the blue mountains although it isnt said.

The whole point of being a wandering smith is not staying at any one place for very long. The narration just says "villages of men". Balin does mention earlier in the film that Thorin made them a good home in the Blue Mountains, but that's after the "wandering smith"-phase.

Dwarf Characterization [In reply to] Can't Post

Apologies as this is a first post from a long time lurker, but if someone could provide some insight, I would really appreciate it!

How is the dwarven characterization of the Company in the movie? I know much has been said about poor Bombur not getting any lines, but Thorin and Balin being stand outs, but does anyone who has seen the movie feel that good characterization is starting to take root?

I am a big fan of Gloin from the books so I am particularly interested in him - how is he portrayed? Can you make a determination of his character from his lines? I REALLY hope he (and Oin) get fleshed out more in the next two movies, I do love the dwarves. Thanks in advance!

Not much about Gloin and Oin [In reply to] Can't Post

Thorin tells them to start a fire, they have a few lines of dialogue each, but not much more.

Dori and Ori probably have the most spotlight among the minor dwarves.

Thanks very much, I appreciate it. Hopefully they will get more time in the future. I think not fleshing out Gloin is a missed opportunity to draw a nice connection with Gimli.

Hopefully more will be upcoming.

questions [In reply to] Can't Post

Do they show Thorin cutting his beard or that happens offscreen?

Any dwarf of the company shouts "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd aimênu" in the movie?
