TIME - December 10 Can't Post

Today in Middle-earth.

December 10, 3019 (S.R. 1419)
1. Bag End is restored.
(not from the appendices)
..."...One of the first things done in Hobbiton, before even the removal of the new mill, was the clearing of the Hill and Bag End, and the restoration of Bagshot Row. The front of the new sand-pit was all levelled and made into a large sheltered garden... ...new holes were dug in the southward face, back into the Hill, and they were lined with brick. The Gaffer was restored to Number Three; and he said often and did not care who heard it:
...'It's an ill wind as blows nobody no good, as I always say. And All's well as ends Better!'
...There was some discussion of the name that the new row should be given. Battle Gardens was thought of, or Better Smials. But after a while in sensible hobbit-fashion it was just called New Row. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey's End."

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

Sigh [In reply to] Can't Post

It was a year ago today the Gaffer and I were in Hobbiton, admiring the restored Bagshot Row---when we were there in '08, it was no more than a pile of rubble.

Thanks for such an appropriate passage, gramma! (Deep breaths now, the plunge is upon us Smile )

It must have felt like [In reply to] Can't Post

the Scouring and restoration to you - to see it all in ruins, then rebuilt! What an experience!

A year ago? It hardly seems possible...

Hi Gramma! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm back on the boards more frequently now and couldn't see your name anywhere.. until I came to this forum and scanned the names and voila.. there you were.

Nice to see you're still around. When I realised I hadn't seen your name for a while, I started to panic.

I will go there ... and back again.

Yes, exactly... [In reply to] Can't Post

It was like having gone through a mini-scouring, seeing the set in fairly bad shape in '08 and then seeing it completely rebuilt in '11. I'm so glad they're keeping it in good condition this time.

Yeah. A year. Sigh.

oh my... the best of times :) [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll bet you miss it. That mixed feeling of discovery and being home. I'm so happy Mr F and you have had the chance to see Hobbiton reborn. This really is the BS for you. Strange that it would be today :)

*warm hug*

Today in Middle-earth.

December 11, 2942 (S.R. 1342)
1. Travelling around Mirkwood.
(determined from text-no text)
...Gandalf, Bilbo and Beorn have been on their journey from the Lonely Mountain to Beorn's home for a fortnight. They have finally come to the north-east edge of Mirkwood and turn west following the northern edge of the forest. The Grey Mountains are close as they make their way between mountain and wood.

It's time for some BS! [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's part 1 of a set of Book Spoilers that walks with Sam as he journeys through Cirith Ungol... for a moment of Tolkien-zen.

The Tower of Cirith Ungol: The Return of the King

... "All was ominously quiet. The light was no more than that of dusk at a dark day's end...
... ...Sam looked up towards the orc-tower, and suddenly from its narrow windows lights stared out like small red eyes. He wondered if they were some signal. His fear of the orcs, forgotten for a while in his wrath and desperation, now returned. As far as he could see, there was only one possible course for him to take: he must go on and try to find the main entrance to the dreadful tower; but his knees felt weak, and he found that he was trembling... ...he forced his unwilling feet to obey him, and slowly, listening with all his ears, ... ...he retraced his steps, past the place where Frodo fell, and still the stench of Shelob lingered...
... ...he halted and sat down. For the moment he could drive himself no further.... ...Without any clear purpose he drew out the Ring and put it on again. Immediately he felt the great burden of its weight, and felt afresh, but now more strong and urgent than ever, the malice of the Eye of Mordor, searching....
... ...Sam found that his hearing was sharpened, but that to his sight the things of this world seemed thin and vague. ... ...he heard cries and the clash of metal... ...his hearing had deceived him: the orc-cries came from the tower, whose topmost horn was now right above him, on the left hand of the cleft.
... Sam shuddered and tried to force himself to move. There was plainly some devilry going on. Perhaps in spite of all orders the cruelty of the orcs had mastered them, and they were tormenting Frodo, or even savagely hacking him to pieces. He listened; and as he did so a gleam of hope came to him. There could not be much doubt: there was fighting in the tower, the orcs must be at war among themselves, Shagrat and Gorbag had come to blows. Faint as was the hope that his guess brought him, it was enough to rouse him. There might be just a chance. His love for Frodo rose above all other thoughts, and forgetting his peril he cried aloud: 'I'm coming, Mr. Frodo.'
... He ran forward to the crown of the climbing path, and over it. At once the road turned left and plunged steeply down. Sam had crossed into Mordor...."
