University exams sound horrid. We only have one week of exams at the end, definitely not three. I could not do that!

Brilliant idea! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've spent about 1/100th of the time I planned to on the Hobbit Board... and now it's covered with spoiler land-mines!!

I plan to see each of the filming formats at least once; but right now, I plan to spend most of my viewings in the old-fashioned format.

To pass the time until next Thursday night, I'm finishing my prepping for the Line Party I'll be hosting for the midnight 0-1 show. Trivia games, prizes, costume contest, who drove the furtherst...stuff like that :) I'm going to wear my wraith costume to keep warm whilst out tending the line-stander who are snaked out-of-doors.

I've also been passing the time putting together... with the help of several sibbies... a gift guide of Hobbit/LotR goodies for Holiday Shoppers. It's a list that will eventually be posted on the homepage; but with time running out for online shopping, I figured I'd stick it over on the Gaming and Collecting Board. Go have a peek if you need some gift ideas :)

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

This thread feels like a refuge already [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel like reminiscing, to ease my tension a bit. On January 8th 2002 my brother took me to watch FotR. Neither of us had read the books, and I had no concept of what was in it for me. I just went along because it was his birthday, and even though he hadn't read the book, he was excited about the movie. I have to admit I was skeptical at first. The first 10 minutes or so I kept thinking "This is stupid, how can a ring have power? This doesn't make sense, I don't get it." I wish I could say I was drawn in after that, but I think I would be lying. I think for some reason I didn't want to like it. What I do remember is looking at my watch and thinking "well this can't be much longer, it's been nearly 3 hours already." This was when Sam and Frodo were looking at Mt. Doom in the distance, and I was relieved because I knew that they really only had to go on and toss the ring in the volcano, how much longer could that take? Then bam, credits. What the...? Why is the movie over? They were practically there already!? What? A sequel? A whole other movie just for that? TWO MOVIES? And I have to wait HOW LONG? I knew it was a trilogy, but for some reason I believed they would be 3 different stories. Crazy
I don't know when the change happened. Luckily that year I started a new job for a movie theatre chain, and had some awesomely nerdy colleagues there who did a good job drawing me in. After TTT I finally read the book, and by the time ROTK rolled around, I was completely drawn in. Not nearly as much as my brother though. See, he never reads, he just doesn't like it. But he read the book right before the 3rd film came out, in 6 days I think (took me several weeks). Then a few weeks later for his birthday in 2004 I gave him a boxed set of several of Tolkiens works, including the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and some other stuff (4 or 5 books in total). He read them all within just a few weeks. I believe he's never touched them after that, nor any other books that I would know of. To this day I don't quite understand what happened there.
On Tuesday he is coming to visit me, and we will see AUJ together, and I know I will think back to that first movie experience, and laugh at myself a little. He hasn't read the Hobbit btw, he never wanted to read a children's book. I'm dying to see if he will read it after next week.

Exactly how I feel [In reply to] Can't Post

Leading up to the release of LOTR movies, I was hugely apprehensive they would murder the most important book of my existence, and I needed some of the spoilers to dampen the angst and prepare myself for the inevitable changes.

I'm nowhere near as emotionally invested in The Hobbit. I'm sure I'll go, but I won't stand in line for a midnight showing. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but it won't be a life-changing experience, either way. I'm sure I'll find things to criticize, but it won't get my shorts in a bunch.

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

Great story [In reply to] Can't Post

And interesting perspective of a movie-firster! Funny how you thought it would take no time for them to get to Mount Doom Laugh

You bring up a point that I think is worth considering. Your brother hasn't yet read The Hobbit but you think he might now. I wonder how movie-firsters for The Hobbit will take to the book. I've slowly come to terms with a hobbit trilogy, but I understand that it's going to be significantly different from the book. It's part of the reason I'm making my little brother and sister read the book first, because I want them to love the book which might be difficult if they've first seen a movie adaptation in the vein of LOTR. I'm expecting many people who watch the film to pick up the book and wonder if they've gotten the right book or not. Hmm...

Obviously, they need to rewrite the book! [In reply to] Can't Post

Obviously PJ&Co should rewrite The Hobbit to be more like the movie, inserting the Dwarf history and Dol Guldur stuff as well as anything new they've made for the movies! Evil

That is a cool story about your brother. If he read Unfinished Tales, he'd be familiar with the Istari and the Quest for Erebor, at least, though I'd guess he wouldn't remember much after reading through them quickly ten years ago!

The 13 minute documentary... [In reply to] Can't Post

Has anyone watched the new 13 minute documentary with the writers? How spoilery is it? Does it show a bunch of whole scenes or describe exactly how the story will be laid out?

Watch it [In reply to] Can't Post

I just did about half an hour ago. It was fantastic. There were no whole scenes or anything like that. It basically tells the history of the dwarves (from the book, nothing spoilery) and sets up why they recruit Bilbo. It also talked about how the films will connect with LOTR such as with the trolls, etc.

The one thing that might stop you, though, is that it showed some Alan Lee drawings of the Lonely Mountain, like the entrance and the inside.

Book vs. Movie [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm just afraid people won't like the book because it seems the tone is radically different, which could make a big impact on how one views the book.

I'm avoiding the Hobbit forum, not all things Hobbit Wink

I see no problem with continuing to watch tv spots (which I've done, #10 on the hobbit facebook page was astounding!) or documentaries/behind-the-scenes. I know they'll have some tidbits about the films, but the Hobbit forum is another animal entirely. That is a dark place where spoilers are dropped like bombs and scene descriptions run rampant. It's practically anarchy! Shocked

Ok it might not be that crazy (yet!) but it will be.

it's not 3 weeks per student! [In reply to] Can't Post

My university is MASSIVE. There are at least 20,000 students on my campus (the largest- but there are at least 2 more major ones in my city for that university) so they have to have a 3 week period so they can schedule everyone's exams in. You have max 4 exams for your 4 subjects. (some people overload to 5 but that's a recipe for crazy.) Not every subject has an exam, either.

There's a Bard and Leggy picture floating around? [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting. I'm not going out of my way to see it, but if I do, it won't bother me. Obviously, we know they're both in the films, so seeing a picture of them isn't really a spoiler in my book.

I've already seen what Bard looks like anyway - from that leaked vlog 8 alternative (which was excellent, by the way). And of course, we all know what Legolas looks like in general, so seeing a picture of him in a different costume than normal isn't a big deal.

I still can't believe you don't get the film for such a long time. Were the LOTR films this late for you as well?
