Sylvester McCoy Interview Can't Post

The Los Angeles Times has a new interview with Sylvester McCoy about his role as Radagast in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as well as his experience on Doctor Who. One of the questions might add some interesting speculation to folks on the TORN board.

LATimes: And you get to carry a staff…
McCoy: If you know your “Lord of the Rings,” you might recognize it. You’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next three years. You’ll find out about that staff. It’s quite important eventually. It’s a mystery. I don’t want to give it all away.

It's interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

But since the first images of Radagast I have had a little notion of how the character will play out and it's interesting to see the clues fitting in rather well.

I wonder if they'll go the route that Tolkien went: Radagast basically retires/retreats into the forest. [In reply to] Can't Post

Perhaps when he believes the Necromancer is gone, he will give his staff to Gandalf, and "retire" as a wizard and disappear forever into the forest.

We don't really know what happens [In reply to] Can't Post

To him in the texts do we (beyond the UT quote:

"Indeed, of all the Istari, one only remained faithful [Gandalf], and he was the last-comer. For Radagast, the fourth, became enamoured of the many beasts and birds that dwelt in Middle-earth, and forsook Elves and Men, and spent his days among wild creatures")

I knew Gandalf (film spoiler) [In reply to] Can't Post

would get Radagast's staff! The question is, how? I can see a very emotional scene where Gandalf picks up the staff after the White Council/Dol Guldur battle as it is laying beside Radagast, who is dead... I don't know, makes perfect sense to me.

My hopes exactly! [In reply to] Can't Post

I would love that, then Gandalf seeing the moth throughout LOTR would have so much more significance. Radagast working behind the scenes to help in small ways during the War of the Ring.

I would hate to see him die, I think allowing him to fade away within the forests of Middle Earth is the best solution for this mysterious character.

About the staff, [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't tell if Gandalf's had a crystal on it like Radagast's in The Hobbit (so far)? Gandalf's did in LOTR, I remember him using it in Moria. So maybe he inherits Radagast's crystal at the end? I hope that doesn't mean...

Frito groaned. "I wish I had never been born," he said.
"Do not say that, dear Frito," cried Orlon. "It was a happy minute for us all when you were born."

Radagast gets the chop. Evil

Or Radagast decides to just give Gandalf the staff, since he has no more use of it?
