Fell beasts vs. Smaug Can't Post

After catching a glimpse of Smaug in one of the new cryptic TV spots, I'm left contemplating the difference is between a fell beast and dragon in design terms. Won't they end up looking quite similar? On first impression Smaug doesn't appear much larger than a fell beast, and he looks to be the same color. Obviously, he's a different being, with fire-breathing abilities, great intelligence, greed for gold, malevolence, etc. But I really hope they can keep him looking quite distinct, especially in his pre-golden stage. What do you think?

How did you compare size? [In reply to] Can't Post

We have no reference for comparison and haven't seen his full scale.

i agree... [In reply to] Can't Post

he doesn't look so different from a fellbeast in this one...and we all know, howe will be mostly involved in the design of the dark creatures, whereas, lee will design the lighter creatures

Again, how can one make such a comparison? [In reply to] Can't Post

The shot is pixelated and filmed from a TV. All one can see is a tip of a wing.

Apart from having a tip of a wing, I don't see any other comparison?

Huh? [In reply to] Can't Post

wow, talk about making up things to worry about...

I honestly don't see any basis for concern over the size of Smaug vs. a fell beast. I'm CERTAIN that PJ & Co. are acutely aware of the size and grandeur of Smaug being absolutely necessary in his overall depiction. To me, there's on reason to fear that he'll be too small. A wing tip seen in a flash of an instant in a TV spot isn't nearly enough information to go on.

If you're using the John Howe picture (as the one poster below used) as a comparison, that's also a pretty weak foundation to build off of. First off, it's a drawing. It could be used as a basis for Smaug's design, but it's probably not what the final design will be. Also, take a close look at the painting. There is at least one "man" on the bridge that Smaug is destroying. Compare that man relatively to the size of Smaug. Now go back in your mind to Eowyn beheading the Fell Beast in ROTK.... Yeah, that "man" in the painting isn't coming anywhere near slicing through that dragon's neck in one, two or even a few sword strokes.

I have other things that are concerning to me about these films... the physical depiction of Smaug is probably last on the list. If there's anything PJ does right, it's create spectacle, especially with the creature designs (Mumakil anyone?).

Hope not. I like Lee's Smaug renderings MUCH better than Howes. I like Howe's visions of Gandalf and the Elves [In reply to] Can't Post

but Lee does Smaug far better to me. And Smaug needs to dwarf The Fell Beast. He should be at least two to three times the size of one of them.

Cumberbatch did say he was as big as the empire state building didn't he? [In reply to] Can't Post

thats pretty dag gone big... I wouldn't worry about it the worst that can happen is they screw it up, and the best that can happen is Smaug will be the dragon to top all dragons ever on film... Only 2 more weeks till we at least see a small part of him at least and a whole other year for them to get the design right for film 2. Wink
