Later actions. It is often easy to forget that we will be without benefit of narrator, of the description of Bilbo's thoughts or of any dialogue when we encounter the moment on film. Instead, when we get there, Freeman will essentially be conveying as much as he can through mime and facial expression (in semi-darkness!) "A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo’s heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold fish, sneaking and whispering. All these thoughts passed in a flash of a second. He trembled. And then quite suddenly in another flash, as if lifted by a new strength and resolve, he leaped." Not the easiest charade to play or for the audience to interpret. A little dialogue here will no doubt be a good support. LR

And the acting is a little bit dull. I cannot get used to this cheap look of digital.

Once again I am left entranced both by the wonderful score and Ian McKellen's perfect rendition of Gandalf. Martin Freeman is also brilliant here.

I won't spoil it, but it's a brilliant 40seconds. It echoes a conversation between Gandalf and Frodo in FOTR too.

I would not judge the quality of the digital photography by this horribly compressed codec, on youtube. I would bet the color and exposure of the final image look nothing like what you see here. Andrew Lesnie and Peter Jackson, are not blind. Concerning the acting, I almost believe there is a cut in this scene, that is making it slightly awkward, right after Gandalf says, "The blade is of elvish make."

It does seem that the scene here looks a bit overexposed and almost no color grading applied to it.

Is it just me, or does the color grading in this clip look like a bad Instagram? The clip almost looks like it was shot in black and white and then colorized! The flesh tones are washed out and the blues (Gandalf's hat and eyes) are WAY saturated. Surely, this can't be what Peter intended; he has stated all along that his goal was to make fantasy look real, and this treatment just pulls me right out of the film.

Exactly! Not only is it a horribly compressed youtube encode, it's a horribly compressed youtube encode drawn from a TV broadcast source! Brightness, color, contrast, and obviously CLARITY, are likely dramatically different then what you will see in the theater or on your DVD or Blu Ray.

There'll be "exclusives" on TV when the actors come to the UK - keep an eye out for morning news (BBC 1 and ITV) and shows like the One Show. I won't watch them with the release so close.

Part of me is sad that Bilbo isn't allowed to have his defining moment of greatness un-coached, but portraying the inner conflict and decision process Bilbo undergoes at that moment was always going to be a difficult thing. This foreshadowing should put the audience on the same page with Bilbo at that point. I think I will be able to live with it.

and I love they've kept a bit of Tolkien's humanism in there somewhere! Also, nicely foreshadows Bilbo's fateful decision concerning a certain cave-dwelling individual.
My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit" 5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck 4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot 3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan 2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate 1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

And the clearer that is the better. All these toys making the hat grey, and even some of the film photos. This clip made my day, partly for the great content, but also because it was proof positive of a tall, pointed BLUE hat. Is it just me, or does the color grading in this clip look like a bad Instagram? The clip almost looks like it was shot in black and white and then colorized! "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

I'm curious. Where is the "Comedy" in this scene? Also, what is this "most important decision" in Bilbo's life you speak of?

But the decision she is referring to is Blibo's decision to spare Gollum's life. Without this, of course, Frodo's quest would have failed. I actually wonder if there would have even been a quest. Would murdering Gollum have changed Bilbo into a creature much more like Gollum? Is the only difference between Smeagol and Bilbo the fact that one killed under the influence of the ring and the other did not? Just something I've been thinking about recently.
