Observation on the eagles (SPOILERS if you didn't see the scans of the WETA book) Can't Post

Don't read if you don't want to get spoilers based on 'the Hobbit: chronicle' scans.

I think the eagle's eyrie will be left out.

Based on these scans, the movie ends at the Carrock (btw. a design that really wowed me! Wonderfull!). I think this means the eagles pick them up from the burning trees and fly them straight to the edges of Mirkwood, leaving them at the top of the Carrock (this could provide wonderfull images: the sunset over the woods for instance).
But this also means two other things, or at least what I think it means:

1) The eagles won't talk, and in extend: none of the birds in 'the hobbit' will.
2) This leaves out the possibility to give the eagles more backstory, and to give them a reason why they don't just fly them to the mountain (unless maybe Radagast tells more about it).

Any thoughts?

I see no reason for not having a talking raven [In reply to] Can't Post

Real ravens can learn words in human speech.

The thrush, of course, doesn't speak English. Bard understands thrush-language.

I don't think so [In reply to] Can't Post

Peter wouldn't end the film with a rush into the next adventure. There has to be some kind of pause, so the eyrie fits rather well. I don't expect it to be missing in the film.

I hope so [In reply to] Can't Post

I would really like Rońc to be in the movies and talking, but I'm not so sure they will keep him in, or let him talk. Talking animals are 'a dangerous business' on film, it can easily become very silly.

On one hand we know the spiders will 'communicate' but that doesn't mean 'talk'.
On the other hand Smaug will talk, and he can also be concidered 'an animal'

Might be [In reply to] Can't Post

but the Carrock can function as this kind of pause.
Have you seen it in the scans? It's not just a little rock. It has a grand view! That's why I think it will replace the eyrie as resting/pause point.

Just because we didn't see the eyries in the book scans [In reply to] Can't Post

doesn't mean they're not in the movie. Heck, they could be in the book too, and just weren't scanned.

Of course, it's possible the eyrie scene is cut. After the climatic escape from the fiery forest, a stop at the eyries might feel dragging.

I personally wish to see them. After getting all these Deus Ex Machina eagles, it'd be nice to let them have more to them than just serving as the M-E tax service. Sly

(Btw, let's hope the easgle rescue has some foreshadowing. Possibly by Radagast. Otherwise the audience may not take kindly to it.)

We already know Radagast is going to talk in a bird language [In reply to] Can't Post

with his birds. And the "dialogue" is going to be subtitled. So most certainly our friend Roac is going to talk too.

In the movies so far (lotr) [In reply to] Can't Post

the eagles are still the deus ex machina's and giving them some background will help to change it, that's true.

Although PJ loves multiple endings I think 'standing-at-the-eyrie-and-looking-at-landscapes' resembles 'standing-at-the-carrock-and-looking-at-landscapes' too much Smile

The Eagles talking aren't a deal-breaker for me... [In reply to] Can't Post

I will still be disappointed if the Eagles don't speak, but there are enough characters in the book that can understand bird-speech that I would be okay with Gandalf speaking for them (as long as it is made clear that the Great Eagles are intelligent). In story terms, I think it is actually more important that Rońc and his kin can be understood by the audience.

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

Sylvester McCoy commented in the Hobbit art book he appreciated the fact he had to learn less lines because some of his "conversations" were just him whistling and would get subbed in the movie.

On the contrary... [In reply to] Can't Post

There is no indication that Bilbo or the Narrator are translating the Eagles' dialogue from bird-speech; and every indication that they are speaking the common tongue. The book makes it apparent that Bilbo cannot understand the normal speech of birds of any type (he only pretends to partially understand the crows and the thrush).
