The Tolkien Estate is sueing Warner Bros. for $80 million. Can't Post

This has nothing to do with Peter Jackson or any of the movie production but specifically is aimed at the merchandising.

They are aiming the lawsuit at Digital Media and Casino's who have abused the licensing agreement.

Here's the Deadline Article.

Here is the legal complaint.

It's good they started now. [In reply to] Can't Post

This looks like it could take awhile to resolve.

For the record I don't like the idea of LOTR themed online gambling or physical slots even.

Yeah I can understand their displeasure... [In reply to] Can't Post

at seeing exploitation.

It seems their issue is directly with new media (digital games/apps etc.) and gambling.

Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

Though, I hope the $80 million doesn't disappear into the Estate ...

HAHA, you get what you pay for, WB [In reply to] Can't Post

Awesome, I am all against overmerchandising and these greedy companies, for once they are the ones paying the bills. It's very good that Tolkien Estate takes action against this sort of discreditable profit BS Warner Bros. is farming.

I mean, don't you think it's degrading the whole Tolkien's works' reputation that they sell all kinds of junk in the name of these masterpieces. And even worse, take legal action against completely innocent things like the MERP, wich might even keep up the fans' interest while big companies are fighting for money. Absolutely noone has ever bought or will buy Skyrim for only one mod, and if would i don't think it will hurt in WB's purse...

Pessimists have no disappointments.

I think they have a good case.... [In reply to] Can't Post

... morally, at least, for what they're arguing. Attaching Tolkien's name and work to online gambling is tacky and inappropriate. There should be a line drawn somewhere.

Completely agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope they can get all they ask for from WB who seem to be bullies.

I dislike the amount of merchandising that is being done - i understand it will most likely make more money for WB than the films themselves - as is the case with Star Wars but i dont like it - most of it is tasteless and tacky.

Amen [In reply to] Can't Post

I was looking at Elbenwald.de today, the bedsheets, the cuddly pillows for Kili and Thorin, the alarm clocks, plush figurines, bobble heads, mugs, it is all just so over the top. Unsure WHO buys this stuff? A collectible figure or a weapon or jewelery replica I get, but this?

They'll create and use whatever can be sold [In reply to] Can't Post

That's the marchandising these days. They have commercialized the Hobbit and even LOTR into money-making machines. When I saw all the promotions that they made for the films on Hobbit day I was disgusted.

Something tells me this is just the beginning ;) [In reply to] Can't Post

They're going to be very busy!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
