Just got home from work, and there was the tube, on the table - the mailman had brought it to our door rather than leaving it in the mailbox. Very easy to get out! And it's so much more...handsome?..."in person"! What a work of art! I've #16 - does that say something about me, that that's a perfect square?

Aren't you all glad I'm going to stop obsessing about it, now?? LOL I came around the corner onto my cul-de-sac and there, ahead of me, sticking out from my mailbox at the curb was this white tube and I knew, I just knew (well, what else could it be, anyway?). Then I flew in the door and gingerly pried the thing out of the tube and VOILA, there it was. #13. Well, somebody had to have that particular number, might as well be me. And think: if #13 arrived safely, that means they are all going to be just fine. OK, gotta go gaze at the thing for awhile. a.s.

My best friend and I both had sons born on Friday the 13th, and my son was married on the 13th. How cool that you're the one who got the thirteenth map! (Hmmm, now there's a title, The Thirteenth Map.....)

Us old math teachers love to hear that kind of talk. Which reminds me my dad's old proof that all counting numbers are interesting. (This should come in useful in the present circumstances.) It's a proof by contradiction. Assume that some counting numbers are not interesting. Then of all of those uninteresting numbers, one of them is the smallest. Just think of it: the smallest number that's not interesting. Isn't that interesting? :-P

and thinking that something like what Daniel described must have happened. It makes me think of the story about Navaho blankets: they're always made with a flaw in them, because nothing made by human hands should ever be perfect. So this illustrates that an amazing artist really did something beautiful with his own hands, instead of on a computer or something. And I agree, that makes it something special.

I was late getting home, and I was running right out the door again to go kitty-sit. But it's on good, stiff paper, so it's nice quality. If it's smaller than the original, it's not by much. It's not quite so obviously hand-drawn, but still crisp and vivid. A very acceptable substitute to the real thing!

And I thought the "flaw" made it special. Now it's even more special, knowing the story behind it!

But the posters are a little smaller. I do remember that from one of the messages on the old Yahoo boards, but Daniel recently confirmed the sizes are the same.

Yeah, I originally wrote down "two to the fourth power", but figured most folks would only either roll their eyes at that, or scream and run... Oh no, not the "uninteresting" proof! I remember that! With logic only a mathematician could love...

My daughter and I got back from our writers' group today and as we pulled up to the house there was a long white tube in the mailbox. She said, offhandedly, "It looks like a map." And I said, shamelessly stealing Morwen's line, "Mappity map map map!" As we got to the mailbox, she said, "It looks like you didn't get any interesting mail." As I stared at her in amazement, she amended it to "Except for the map, of course."
