Boyens says neither she nor Jackson or Walsh considered trimming the number of dwarfs, having Bilbo kill Smaug and shifting the dragon's death. "There are certain things that are sacrosanct and those dwarfs are one of them. And in the end it was a relatively easy solve. It's in the storytelling. I sort of had this eureka moment one day when I realised that it's not about it being too many dwarfs but about there being too few. Once you shape the story and you understand that there's only 13 of them and they are going to try to take back a mountain from a dragon you're off."

"We could have introduced a female human character. But we decided on an elf. There was a little story thread in Lord of the Rings that we wanted to pick up on and develop and it involved a very feminine energy, so we decided to use it and the character of Tauriel came into being."
I wonder what 'little story thread in Lord of the Rings' she is referring to? Any ideas? Maybe Ioreth will make an appearance after all :P

I think they've really wanted to have a female Elf warrior since LOTR, and Tauriel's given them the opportunity to see that vision realized

I was thinking of the book, rather than the movie - it didn't occur to me that she could be referencing a story thread from their version of the movie that didn't make it to the final cut.
I'm much happier with a female warrior elf from Mirkwood than Arwen at Helm's Deep (or any elves at Helm's Deep, for that matter!).

She is just brilliant! Her energy and way of expressing her love and enthusiasm for LotR and now TH always gets me torqued! The first time I listened to the RotK eedvd commentaries and at the very end she whispered "yea" as she quietly clapped her hands just moved me in a surprising way. She's a fan. She's a geek, She's authentic... and she's unchanged.
I am also so grateful for her touching on how the project moved from GdT to Peter. I've always seen a parallel in how this change brought the film to where it was meant to be in the same way Townsend as Aragorn changed to Viggo. I'm not saying this right... but if Townsend hadn't been hired first, they would never have approached Viggo when and how they did. They called Viggo when Henry (his son) was there and talked him into taking the part. If Henry hadn't been there, I don't think Viggo would have said yes.
Same with Peter and GdT. Peter did NOT want to direct, but GdT's enthusiam and participation helped Jackson, Boyens and (I'm sure) Walsh fall in love with this project in a way they never anticipated. So when GdT had to withdraw, it was easy (or meant to be) for Jackson to step forward and make these films into what they certainly would not have been in the beginning.
Bottom line, I'm so grateful for the Will of Good's influence over they entire series of Tolkien's stories as told by Jackson, Walsh and Boyens. We're so lucky!
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
