Seeking participants for a major international study of The Hobbit audience

Hi everyone, some of you may know that a major international research project has recently launched, the first stage of which seeks to explore audience engagements with The Hobbit prior to the film's release. If you might be willing to participate, we'd be most interested to hear your views! Here is a little more information about what's involved: INVITATION TO BE PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL HOBBIT AUDIENCE PROJECT In this survey we are keen to hear people’s thoughts, expectations and hopes relating to The Hobbit prior to its international release. We’d like to hear from people with all kinds of views, including the many fans of The Lord of the Rings movies, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, and Peter Jackson. And that means we would like to hear from you :) About us: We’re a team of academic researchers located at the University of Waikato (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Ryerson University (Toronto, Canada). We are interested in the nature of audience reception, and in understanding why different people often have very different views and understandings of the same film. In the recent past, we’ve studied cross-cultural receptions of James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar. Now, we’ve turned our attention to another major film production that already seems to be generating a diverse range of responses – Peter Jackson’s forthcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. What is involved: Completing the survey will take around 30 minutes (yes, it's a little long, sorry!), and involves a combination of sorting and ranking a selection of statements relating to The Hobbit, as well as a more traditional questionnaire with click responses and a few open ended questions where you can tell us what you really think, in your own words, saying as much or as little as you would like to share. While the survey method may seem unfamiliar at first, most people find it quite straightforward. Please read the instructions carefully, and if you need to read them again you can do so by clicking ‘help me’, which you will find on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Unfortunately, those using Apple macs or ipads may not be able to complete the survey because it uses Flash, but if you have access to a PC or android tablet it should work fine. It probably won't be possible to complete the survey on a smart phone, sorry. If you do decide to complete the survey, clicking http://goo.gl/4vsvf will take you to the formal consent agreement, which looks rather ominous but provides important details about your rights as a research participant. The most important things to know are that your participation is entirely voluntary, your answers will remain anonymous, and you can say as much or as little as you wish. We would really appreciate your involvement - Lay hah-non!

It didn't take as long as you said it might. Please share the results if you get a chance.

Thanks so much for participating SirDennisC, I really appreciate it! And yes, we will endeavour to share the results widely, posting a summary of findings here on TORn once the analysis from Phase 1 is complete, Best wishes, Carolyn Michelle

I think most of the really avid Hobbit fans...

...hang out at the Hobbit movie board. Some of the wander off to other board - like Main - occasionally. Not many. I think many of the people who check main are Hobbit fans, too. Maybe not quite as avid. :-) Anyhow. I really do think you'll get more response if you post this to the Hobbit board. If you think that's a good idea, you can post a request on the Feedback board for an admin/mod to move it. You shouldn't post a new thread. Rules are - one thread at a time. Or, if the study is ongoing, you could wait a bit till this thread falls to the second page the Main Forum index and then post a new thread on The Hobbit board. Once a thread has fallen to the second page, a new thread can be made. Questions, just post them on Feedback. :-) cheers.

Hi Magpie, yes, that was my impression too, but I am happy to leave this on the main board for now until it drops to page two, and then repost in the Hobbit movie board - and hopefully this will pick up different people? The survey is open until the movie is released, so there should be plenty of time :) But if it stays here too long I will do as you suggest and make a request to have it shifted. Many thanks for letting me know the process! Carolyn Michelle

CaroMichelle actually DID originally post this on both Hobbit Movie and here simultaneously, and I removed the Hobbit Board one, thinking she'd get more responses here! Let's go with your second plan, Magpie: let's leave this thread here until it falls to the second page, then, CaroMichelle, post it again on the Hobbit Board.

The survey is aimed at people who are anticipating The Hobbit movie. In any event, there is little over a month before a great number of people who are anticipating the movie, no longer will be.

Magpie and SirDennisC both raise important points, as it is possibly the most active Hobbit fans who will be more motivated to participate. So perhaps I'll leave it here just for the next few days and then delete it, and repost the invitation in the Hobbit movie forum, if that's ok? That way there is still plenty of time for those on that forum to see it and (hopefully) consider participating. Thanks for your suggestions and interest all of you, it is really very helpful!

It's absolutely fine Dernwyn, and it's my own fault in any event for posting in two places! We are getting good views here on the main board, and it looks like several TORn members have responded to the survey already - thanks all of you, I really appreciate it!

The survey design was very interesting. I actually really enjoy filling in that type of a thing.

The survey design was very interesting Quite interesting, yes, but in some cases really hard to decide how to rate and answer ... I mean the ONLY one from my country I am aware of being in the film - or connected with it - is an actor I *detest* ... for example ... I for one KNOW I will *never* get the same experience again from *ANY* film like the LOTR films but I still hope hope hope for some more of the same rare beautiful scenes which touched my heart most in the LOTR films ... Mostly because films in general and PJs films in particular contain too much bad jokes, bad dialogue, cheep laughs, explosions, violence and gore and faaaar too little "epic sweeping landscape shots to soothing complex classical-style music" ... Having been an avid Tolkien fan for nearly 20 years already back then was of course the main reason I got so emotionally connected and touched in some of the scenes of the LOTR films ... Was a bit hard to fit my sentiments into your questionaire but I did at least try :)

thanks so much for those comments Ioreth, and for persisting with the survey despite those difficulties. Hopefully you were able to express more of your own views in the open ended questions? Carolyn Michelle

One of the questions implied that it was a foregone conclusion that people used Facebook and were in the habit of liking things (or not) on Facebook. Interestingly the question was worded in such a way that it made sense to answer in the negative even if you do not use Facebook. As for the country specific statements, I just responded as if the production was taking place in my country, how I would feel if this were true.
