Either its that, or Smaug's assault on Erebor [In reply to] Can't Post

Either way, I'm happy! This puts to rest the fears I had of a limp, Elijah Wood-heavy, fan-safe reunion fest at the beginning.

Whatever his faults, PJ is no Lucas!

I believe there is no better place for Azanulbizar [In reply to] Can't Post

than in the prologue. It will be interesting to see some of the dwarves in their younger days - Dwalin without his tattoos, maybe not white-haired Balin?

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! Carefully with the plates!

The film hasn't been locked down yet [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ originally removed the prologue from the FOTR, and only re-added the scene not long before the premiere.

Who knows how it will turn out.Wink

Are we sure Azanulbizar is even in the films? [In reply to] Can't Post

I must be one of the few people on this site not advocating for its inclusion. If it's in, fine, but I'm not sure I really want it.

Why not? Makes the vague enmity between the two more visceral and personal.

Now, listening to the score, I am fairly certain. Smaug belongs in Dark for Dark Business during the Dwarves occupation of Bag End.

I just wouldn't personally put it in.

PJ's flashbacks tend to be magnificent, so I'm sure this will be as well (if it's in).

Are Azog's theme, and not Smaug's theme ? It would as well explain why it appears in the prologue and at the very end.

Azanulbizar is very importantant for an understanding of the [In reply to] Can't Post

hatred between the Dwarves (Especially Thorin's line) and the Goblin/Orcs. It also sets up the Azog/Bolg thing and introduces Dain, Thorin and a few others.

Because... [In reply to] Can't Post

It has the potential to just be another action sequence.

Also, in the book, there's no connection to the rest of the story of The Hobbit. Azog doesn't come back, Bolg isn't on some vendetta against Dain. In fact, it's just a coincidence that they're at the BOFA together.

I think much of that will be changed in the film to amp up the tension between the goblins and the dwarves. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it's not something I personally need. But I'm sure it'll all turn out just fine in the overall scheme of the movie(s).

There is no need to "set it up".

Dain doesn't need to be introduced until the Bo5A, when his introduction has some meaning.

Im also unsure about this [In reply to] Can't Post

My main problem is PJ seems to find it impossible to introduce anything without attaching story arcs to it.
This is what wrecked Faramir, undermined Aragorn and made such an implausable mess with Frodo sending Sam away- a desire to give everyone and everything a story arc and a journey to go on.
Its as if the very idea that someone might be a grown up who knows their own mind before we meet them is impossible for PJ- they have to go on a journey of self discovery.
No wonder he needs 3 films if he is going to give us such arcs for all 13 dwarves plus now various goblins.
No doubt Bard will get a new arc shoehorned in there too. Probably Beorn too. Not to mention Legolas, Tauriel, Thranduil.....
I just dont get this desire for it- your main character sure, of course, but for me in LotR's PJ took it to silly extremes to the detriment of the original story and characters- this looks like it will be even more so.

So whilst I actually think a bit of background on the dwarf/goblin war is not out of place, I fear PJ will fail to resist using it to develop unnecessary and unwanted arcs for everyone involved. Even if it involves seriously bending or ignoring the history Tolkien laid out and possibly even detracting from the focus of the main story.
