Info from the recently-released movie books Can't Post

So they've been out for a few days now. Who here has them? Is anything revealed that we don't know yet, even if it's just a small plot or character-related detail? I still have to wait a while to get any of the books and am too curious!

I just got the Visual Dictionary... [In reply to] Can't Post

Nothing new...at all.

Very dissappointed! There literally was nothing in there other than a short write up about each character... Mad

Does the relevant section from the book describe the moth's appearance? [In reply to] Can't Post

Does it actually say its appearance precedes the Eagles'? Just curious about how detailed the mention of the moth is.

Good thread. Hope we can get some info together.

Yes, it plays out just like Gandy's escape from Isengard in FotR... [In reply to] Can't Post

Kind-of disappointed that they'd recycle that so obviously, but at least we've avoided Radamoth. Wink

Not sure I like it, but I can understand [In reply to] Can't Post

Having the eagles just happen to notice Gandy and the dwarves in a tree would probably work better in book than movie.

It's from the storybook again. [In reply to] Can't Post

Gandy catches a moth, whispers to it, and sends it away...resulting in the Eagles arriving just in the nick of time. Additionally, one can hear the Moth motif in "A Good Omen" on the score (yup, the moth has its own theme song)! Tongue

Which IMO, is a good thing [In reply to] Can't Post

I was a bit taken aback they reused Gandy's escape from FotR so obviously again, but IMO, the Radamoth rumor reminded me of a similar idea circulating online in the late 90's that in Star Wars Episode I, the Emperor was going to turn Liam Neeson into Yoda. CrazyLaughWinkTongue

Here's the passage from the book: [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
Gently catching a moth in his hands, he whispers a secret message to it and sends it off into the darkening skies...Before the Orcs can deliver the killing strike, a group of Giant Eagles sweeps in from the sky. They have received Gandalf's message and have come to rescue everyone.

I really loved the moth in the trilogy (especially its beautiful introduction), but it appearing like that in AUJ.... [In reply to] Can't Post

...may not exactly help the "This film has so many similar beats to Fellowship" argument (which I don't agree with, but I'm sure many people will make it).

Unless they explain where it comes from in later films, I guess the moth is the Tom Bombadil of these movies?

Meh! It's a bit lame using that device again... [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, why can't the eagles just have been circling, looking to see what the uproar was all about? They live right close by, after all! There's doesn't need to be a message sent to summon them each time, surely? Frown

It would only make sense to me if they do make a link between the moth and Radagast to explain its apparent significance/importance...

Deux Ex Machina [In reply to] Can't Post

There is a (modern) storytelling convention that says it's fine to use coincidence to get your characters into trouble, but not to get them out of it. I'm sure that's their motivation for making the change.

Meh [In reply to] Can't Post

If there is one thing that I wish the filmmakers had learned from their LotR experience, it is that they get in trouble when they try to impose "modern strorytelling convention" on Tolkien.

It's not really that much of a "modern storytelling convention" [In reply to] Can't Post

I do wonder if the moth will be more closely connected to the Eagles in the films, as it has only ever appeared before they do.
