the purpose of Sam/Frodo's quest. In the movies, I think Frodo tells Gollum just before getting bitten by Shelob. In the books, I can't recall anyone ever telling their main purpose to Gollum, but on the slopes of Mount Doom he says, "Mustn't go that way...mustn't hurt precious..." Did he just put two and two together?
In the movies Elrond, Denethor, Haldir, Galadriel, and Celeborn stink.

And that is a brilliant question. I haven't got an answer, but I'll be interested in what others can suggest.
I doubt he has any knowledge whatsoever of the Rings of power, nor how and where to destroy it.

It's one of those other times where perhaps the explanation that Gollum has some sort of 6th-sense regarding the Ring, probably due to his long tenure as ringbearer, could answer a lot of questions.
This just occured to me when watching ROTK and hearing Frodo tell Gollum that he has to destroy it "for both (their) sakes..." Then while listening to the audiobook I heard Gollum say, "Mustn't hurt precious," and it occured to me..."How'd he know?"
In the movies Elrond, Denethor, Haldir, Galadriel, and Celeborn stink.

I am also curious to hear what others think, and I may be wrong, but,
Gollum's sentence, "Mustn't go THAT way," gives me the feeling that perhaps he does have at least some notion that the Ring would be destroyed in the fire...

...and in fact was more fearful that Sauron would claim the Ring back from Frodo. The concept of the Ring being destroyed may not have occurred to him.

To me it seems that just like Sauron, it never really cross Gollum's mind that someone would try to destroy the Ring. The sentence said by Gollum: ''Musn't go that way... Musn't hurt the precious'' makes me think that he may perhaps start to realize that Frodo intent to do so. Still, it doesn't necesserly mean that Gollum knew that the Ring could be destroyed for good in this way. But what is clear to me is that he is intelligent enough to know that if the Ring is cast into the lava of Mount Doom, whether it be destroyed or not at any rate he Gollum, has no chance to get it back.

Gollum AND Sauron not conceiving that anyone would contemplate destroying something so powerful... from their standpoint (let's call it Evil) they would naturally assume the Ring in the "wrong" hands would ultimately be used against them - and not be destroyed.
