Great [In reply to] Can't Post

to hear this first film will be around 160 minutes. The EE will probably end up being around 190-200 minutes.
I do also think PJ will use more material as we get along this trilogy, just as with LOTR. There and Back Again could easily become a 4 hour EE then.

About as long as I expected when I heard it's becoming a trilogy [In reply to] Can't Post

but it does make me think, how long was the cut that made PJ think "This should be a trilogy"

Pleased to hear it's long. :) Was worried for a while that WB were doing a cash grab.

Great to finally see it confirmed! [In reply to] Can't Post

So around 2 hours 40 minutes is without the credits. Nice length! I was one of those fearing that the change from 2 to 3 films might result in shorter movies.

This interview was probably done a couple of weeks ago [In reply to] Can't Post

So the 2h44m reported by Norwegian cinemas could be more accurate.

The 170 minute report [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe including the credits (?), would justify Peter Jackson first saying that it would be ten minutes shorter than FOTR, then saying that FOTR was 3 hours, and then saying this is 2 hours and 40 minutes. Wink

So, is their information on content woefully out of date, or... [In reply to] Can't Post

...is there still a glimmer of hope for Mirkwood? The article reads:

Finally, if you're curious about what to expect from all 160-odd minutes of Hobbity goodness, take a look at the extended scroll poster, the Lego sets ...

...both of which feature scenes that were supposedly cut and postponed until DOS.

Don't mess with my favorite female elf.

So AUJ was originally around 5 hours? [In reply to] Can't Post

I really hope this works out...there's a reason they usually don't include everything they've shot.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

I still don't get how you only make it to the Eagles in 160 minutes! [In reply to] Can't Post

Lots of Rivendell dialogue scenes, complete with flashbacks, maybe...

Parts from the book are -

Shire
Trolls
Rivendell
Mountains
Goblin Town
Wargs

Extra material could amount to -

Frodo/Bilbo
Smaug/Erebor/Dale flashback
Gandald/Radagast/Morgul-blade
Gandalf/Dol-Guldur
Azog flashback
White Council meeting

This is going to amount to a LOT of talking and not much action. Of course, some of the flashbacks, if they happen, will contain action, though only briefly.

I doubt it's gonna be a lot of talking. [In reply to] Can't Post

I just recently relistened the LOTR commentaries. They made the point a lot of times how they needed the story to get going, to not linger too long.

FOTR "action" vs AUJ "action" [In reply to] Can't Post

FOTR vs AUJ

Prologue - Dwarven flashback (attack of Smaug or Azanulbizar)
Weathertop - Troll scene
Watcher in the Water - Stone Giants
Moria - Gollum & Goblin Town
Amon Hen - Out of the Frying Pan

Seems about equal to me?

I agree. [In reply to] Can't Post

There are also the non-action parts which are reasonably comparable>>>

Prologue - Dwarven flashback (attack of Smaug or Azanulbizar)
>>>Bilbo's Birthday / unexpected party
Weathertop - Troll scene
>>>Rivendell / Rivendell
Watcher in the Water - Stone Giants
Moria - Gollum & Goblin Town
>>>Lorien / (this is probably where some of those 20 minutes less of movie comes in ... roughly ...)
Amon Hen - Out of the Frying Pan

So maybe there is actually less talking and more action - and the talking is probably more hilarious and less dramatic. Probably no one dies.
This is something that will make some people like it better than LOTR and others less ... just like comparing the books.

I wonder if TH version of Lorien is Scene 88?

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

But my guess is that PJ will fill that in with some additional stuff. We already know, for example, that he has added a scene where Gandalf describes a bet the dwarves made about whether or not Bilbo would show up. My guess is that we will get character-building scenes like that, and more, along the road.

In fact, this is one aspect that makes me very happy about the three-film decision. There is a lot more time to linger in places, rather than hop around like a video game.
