I'm feeding my brother's cat while he's away. Being welcomed by an animal who's *very* glad to see you is a great way to start the day!

Yes, do give her some ear-scritchies from us! What a sweet, innocent face... I've heard stories of cats which vets will treat only once they put on heavy gloves and coverings. Some of them are such Jekyll and Hydes!

I had a bird when I was young, but mostly I'm NOT a pet person. I've cleaned up after kids and grandkids, and never had much desire to clean up after another living being.

I've always had dogs and cats, and have loved them all dearly. But I think of cats more as friends or confidants, and dogs more like my children - not that they aren't friends and confidants as well, it's just that I feel more responsible for dogs. I really don't know what I'd do without my "babies" - a terrier with personality to spare and a sweet blind beagle who has positivity coming out his floppy ears.

I've always had a faithful Labrador by my side for as long as I can remember, and can only remember 1 year without a Lab (when the first dog died we had year of mourning before getting a second dog). I've never really liked cats very much (which is good, because I actually have an allergic reaction to them!)

It would be easier to choose both of them and get away with it but I'll make a choice. I am more Cat than Dog. Not than I do not like dog, far from that we had had two when I was a child and I liked very much the second in particular. I guess cat mean something just more special to me, it was the first animal I owned. Cats are simple but yet interesting and funny.

I am half shocked by the poll and have not at all. I think there are more women than men here and i have found generally women either prefer cats or are at least open to having them as pets, where as i dont know one man in real life who prefers cats. Cant wait for all the guys liking cats and women preferring dogs comments, lol. its not a rule just a general comment from life where i am from. My dislike of cats started probably from before i could even say cat as my mum has a real dislike/phobia of them as when she was younger one cat randomly jumped up and attacked her, since then she has never felt comfortable around them. I dont feel scared around cats but i just find them kinda pointless, lol. To me they dont show much love at all and basically do as they please. I also dont like the fact that even the nicest cat can randomly scratch you. To me a dog is a true member of the family and shows loyalty and love to all members - they aim to please and will protect you when needed. I have had a few dogs in my life and each one has been great. I love how you can train a dog and exercise with them, play with them. They are basically just more intelligent and so to me more interesting. Cats to me seem more primal and wild at heart. But ultimately i am probably just brainwashed from my mum and positive experiences from dogs and some positive and negative from cats.

where as i dont know one man in real life who prefers cats. <waves> I am definately a cat person, though I like dogs as well. They are basically just more intelligent This section I definately disagree with. Dogs are indeed loyal and obedient - some dogs are almost slaves to their masters. To call them more intellegent than cats is a bit of a leap though, IMO. The cat is independent, the cat can attend to himself and look after his needs and does not require babysitting 24/7 which a dog does. Dogs couldn't survive long without human intervention. They can't climb trees, they can't catch mice, rats, fish, or birds. Cats does all that, and more. My biggest complaints about dogs - they just require so much time every day, which isn't the case for a cat. I've come to realize this now as I am currently taking care of a friend's dog for five weeks now. Lovely dog, but I almost feel all my spare time at days is spent on the dog. Note that this isn't a hate-on-dog post, I just wanted to speak out why I like cats so much, more than dogs.

As long as they got on, that is. I think it also largely depends on ones childhood. If you grew up with dogs, then your more likely to have a dog as an adult. If you grew up with cats, you'll turn into a crazy cat lady/man.

The fact a cat can look after itself does not mean it is intelligent. A fly can look after itself, is it intelligent? There have been studies done to show dogs are smarter than cats, so its ok to think otherwise but scientific studies show that dogs on average are more intelligent. I think the reason you like cats though and dislike dogs is the reason i like dogs and dislike cats, haha. I knew you wouldnt fail me in going against my general consensus though, lol.

Cats come across as lazy, but honestly, they just do as they mind. Dogs are faithful even when their boss threats them unjustly. Non-scientific conclusion = cats are smarter

but your dating advice made me remember this old saw: "A farting horse will never tire - a farting man is the man to hire!" Suitably varied for the thread: "If farting cat you do not hate -- a cat-loving man is good to date."

Poodles and herding dogs are very, very smart, indeed. But some of the more "decorative only" breeds are dumb as logs. A friend had a dog who could not find her own water dish if it was moved three feet. My cat was very easily trained in what was allowed & what was not allowed (no scratching inside, no getting on tables, and if you bring that furry squeaking thing inside, it will be taken away). I think cats are in general more willful, meaning they may know perfectly well what you want and just choose not to do it! This reminds me of something a ranger at Yellowstone told us when showing us the rather complicated garbage cans there, where you had to turn a lever and then push something else to open them: "We've found there's considerable overlap between the dumbest human and the smartest bear."

"We've found there's considerable overlap between the dumbest human and the smartest bear." As a general reply to dogs and cats, i didnt mean to suggest (if anyone thought this) that cats are dumb, they clearly have some level of intelligence and i agree they have their own agenda. Its just when comparing the average cat to the average dog, the dog is more intelligent. It has done this through a very similar method that modern humans have - by becoming more sociable. Being sociable and picking up on human body language so they can please their human requires a larger brain. Cats havent gone through this process as much, as they are more solitary and so they dont get these accidental benefits of being sociable. I am sure there is some super smart cat though, where the cat be used as a cat for the blind instead of a dog. One thing i have noticed when cats and dogs are together is, bigger dogs tend to leave cats alone where as the smaller dogs (roughly the size of the cat) seem to have a go at it more often. I dont know if others have the same experiences with their pets? Perhaps its just a matter of training the larger dogs better as they could easily injure the cat, where as a small dog is probably going to come off worse against a cat and its sharp retractable claws, lol. The level of intelligence shown by animals (i will admit even cats :P) is far greater than people previously thought. I can remember watching a tv show about this female gorilla that could use sign language and when she watched her favourite film and the sad part came on she cried! It also had a dog that worked out what a word was, from having it said to them once - border collie naturally, so practically a human, lol.

I think my cat is very intelligent and very sociable. He collects eggs, fetches his favourite toy, and will come for a cuddle from anyone. But then every animal is very different. My brother's cat is very different. And I agree about dog sizes. My parents Golden Retrievers are fine with my cat. He hates them though. I suspect because he only "meets" them rarely. But I always find smaller dogs to be more pesky than larger ones. Too yappy for their own good.
